The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Oud Imperial emerged from a commitment to letting premium oud take center stage. The intention was clear: gather the finest Middle Eastern oud and let it command attention without interruption. The surrounding materials, labdanum, cypriol, incense, wouldn't dilute the oud. They'd frame it. Labdanum brings a resinous, slightly balsamic warmth that wraps around the central oud note. Cypriol adds an earthy, root-like intensity that grounds the composition. Incense contributes a smoky, meditative quality that elevates the entire blend. Together, these supporting elements create a structure where the oud remains the undeniable focus, allowing its rich, complex character to speak with full authority.
What makes Oud Imperial work is the relationship between its materials, not the complexity of their arrangement. The oud carries the composition, so Maffei designed the surrounding notes to amplify rather than complicate. Labdanum provides balsamic warmth that bridges oud's darker tendencies with something wearable. Incense adds smoke without harshness. Cypriol, nagarmotha, with its earthy, slightly tar-like quality, ties everything together with a grounding precision that keeps the fragrance from scattering.
The evolution
The opening hits with smoky labdanum and a ribbon of incense that doesn't wait for an introduction. The cypriol brings an immediate earthy intensity, this is the statement phase, bold and unapologetic. Around 15 minutes in, the oud arrives at center stage. Not soft. Not gentle. Agarwood in its most concentrated form, with styrax adding a honeyed resin and gurjan balsam bringing a subtle tropical depth. This is the heart of the fragrance, the part that justifies the price. An hour in, the base begins its slow reveal. Sandalwood takes over with creamy warmth. Atlas cedar adds its dry, woody character. Patchouli brings its earthy finish. The drydown settles into a long, quiet conversation between woods and earth. Java vetiver lingers as the final voice, mineral and smoky.
Cultural impact
When Oud Imperial arrived, the oud trend was accelerating. Perris Monte Carlo went the opposite direction, pure extrait concentration, uncompromising intensity. For those who wanted oud that meant business, this became a notable entry in the concentrated oud category.
