The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
OT - 23 arrived in 2015, a release from Olfattology that situates itself within the house's earliest catalog of compositions tied to geographic or cultural reference points. The fragrance opens with a vivid top accord of pink pepper, cardamom, and juniper, where the pink pepper carries a sparkling, almost effervescent quality and the juniper lends a crisp, coniferous clarity. Marine notes and sea notes thread through the opening, lending a saline, ozonic brightness that sits beside green and aromatic elements, creating a layered first impression. As the composition moves into its heart, the aquatic coolness softens and makes room for a denser arrangement of florals and resins.
What sets OT - 23 apart is the sheer breadth of its heart, where marine notes thread beside Peru balsam, where tuberose absolute meets frankincense, where juniper and pink pepper sharpen a floral arrangement that might otherwise drift into pure sweetness. Ylang-ylang contributes its banana-like, sun-warmed sweetness, and the combination with iris gives the heart a powdery, cool undertone that keeps the florals from becoming syrupy.
The evolution
The opening arrives cold and sharp, bergamot and lemon catching light alongside a thread of saffron that reads more as dried silk than as the usual metallic shimmer. Within fifteen minutes the citrus begins to recede, and the saffron darkens, pulling cassia and mandarin into a spiced, slightly bitter register that feels more like walking through a spice market at closing time than like any clean cologne opening. By the hour mark the heart has fully taken over, and this is where OT - 23 shows its real architecture. Aquatic notes flicker at the edges, almost subliminal, while incense, myrrh, and Peru balsam build a resinous wall that the floral materials (tuberose, May rose, magnolia, violet) press against without breaking through. Lavender absolute and pink pepper keep the whole arrangement from sinking into pure devotion. Past three hours the base asserts, oud and cypriol leading a slow procession through guaiac wood, patchouli, vetiver, and sandalwood, each material taking a turn at the surface before settling.
Cultural impact
OT - 23 sits within Olfattology's early catalog as one of the brand's more contemplative releases, and its character leans heavily on incense, oud, and resin rather than on bright, crowd-pleasing top notes. Wearers gravitate toward it for cooler months and evening settings, drawn by the way the marine and ozonic opening settles into a dense, smoky base over the course of a wear.
