The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Selfie arrived in 2015 as a fragrance built around an animalic suede accord, the kind of closeness that photography can never quite capture, softened by maple syrup and grounded in chypre structure. Perfumer Thomas Fontaine crafted this composition to explore themes of self-perception and self-expression. The opening is bright and slightly medicinal, dominated by star anise with ginger cutting through like a spark. Angelica and elemi round the edges, keeping the opening aromatic and slightly green. As the top notes settle, the maple syrup emerges, sweetening the composition from within without tipping into foody territory. The suede accord provides warmth and presence, while the chypre structure with its oakmoss backbone gives the fragrance a lasting foundation.
The star anise and ginger opening is bright, slightly medicinal, and arresting. Maple syrup doesn't arrive immediately; it waits until the top notes settle, then sweetens the composition from within. The suede accord isn't leather, it's styrax resin that provides warmth and intimacy. This warmth reads as closeness, while the sweetness never tips into foody territory. A chypre backbone anchors the drydown, with sandalwood and tonka bean smoothing everything into creaminess. Oakmoss gives the whole composition a structure that refuses to fully disappear, even as the more prominent notes fade.
The evolution
The first minute is all sharp reflex. Star anise dominates, with ginger cutting through like a spark. Angelica and elemi round the edges, keeping the opening aromatic and slightly green. The middle notes arrive gradually, cinnamon first, then maple syrup rising like steam. The lily is quiet; it adds a translucent floral lift that prevents the heart from becoming too sweet. Cabreuva wood keeps things grounded with a soft, milky woodiness that integrates rather than announces. The suede accord emerges as the composition develops, building warmth through labdanum and styrax. This animalic depth adds presence without overwhelming the other elements. The drydown settles into sandalwood cream, tonka bean sweetness, patchouli earthiness, and oakmoss giving the whole composition a chypre structure that refuses to fully disappear.
Cultural impact
Selfie landed in 2015, exploring themes of self-staging, self-expression, and the desire to leave a trace. The fragrance offers a sharp anise-ginger opening that challenges expectations of immediate sweetness, while the animalic suede drydown provides warmth and presence. It's a composition that rewards patience, revealing its depths gradually rather than announcing itself all at once. The maple syrup sweetness softens the edges without becoming saccharine, while the chypre structure gives it a foundation that lasts.
