The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Bergamot & Sandalwood arrived in 2019 as the debut release from Notebook. Rather than chasing seasonal trends, the brand built the catalogue around paired compositions, two ingredients in conversation with each other. This first release set the template: bergamot introducing, sandalwood answering. The bergamot opens with that familiar bright, slightly bitter snap that defines Calabrian citrus at its peak, sharp enough to cut through a room but rounded just enough to avoid aggression. Then the sandalwood settles in, creamy and warm, answering the citrus with a different kind of clarity. The pairing works because neither ingredient tries to dominate.
What makes this composition interesting isn't the individual notes but the architecture. Notebook built each release around a dialogue rather than a hierarchy. Bergamot opens bright and volatile, present briefly before the woody backbone takes over. Grapefruit adds bitter snap, blood orange brings a softer pulp, and pear rounds the sharpness with something almost edible. The citrus here stacks multiple expressions of brightness against each other, each pulling in a slightly different direction. Grapefruit leans sharp and almost pithy.
The evolution
The opening belongs entirely to the citrus. Bergamot, grapefruit, blood orange, and pear hit together like cold water on a warm morning, bright and slightly sharp. There's an aquatic quality here that reads clean rather than synthetic, the kind of freshness that makes you check your wrist twice. As the composition develops, the lavender and pink pepper start pulling it toward something warmer. Nutmeg adds a quiet spice, and the rose and geranium create a soft, slightly soapy floral haze that bridges the opening and the base. The citrus hasn't disappeared. It's just stopped being the loudest voice, retreating into the background while the warmer notes take center stage. Eventually, the sandalwood takes the lead. It's creamy rather than sharp, and it carries tonka and vanilla underneath for a sweetness that never crosses into gourmand territory.
Cultural impact
Bergamot & Sandalwood occupies a particular kind of territory in the woody-citrus space. It doesn't try to compete with louder compositions or denser niche releases. The fragrance reads as quiet and wearable, the kind of scent that works in a wide range of contexts without demanding attention. Wearers tend to gravitate toward it for daily use, for moments when a heavier or more projecting fragrance would feel like too much. The pairing of bergamot and sandalwood gives it versatility: bright enough for warmer weather, warm enough for transitional seasons, grounded enough to feel appropriate in professional settings.
