The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The letter I stands for Italy, and Costume National built an entire fragrance around what that means. Not a postcard. Not a tourist's idea. The real thing, austere, confident, built to last. Perfumer Julien Rasquinet translated that sensibility into scent in 2019, working with the house's Milanese minimalism as both material and instruction. This wasn't designed to smell like Italy's coastline or its cuisine. Instead, the composition opens with warm, enveloping spice that feels simultaneously refined and grounded. There's an immediate sense of structure, as if each element has been deliberately placed to create an experience that speaks to restraint and intentionality.
The structure is what makes I worth studying. Thyme and saffron open the composition, two ingredients that don't typically share space, one herbaceous and grounded, the other warm and almost medicinal. Bergamot keeps the top bright without becoming sweet. In the heart, lavender takes over but it's not the lavender of fresh laundry, it's resinous labdanum giving it weight, geranium adding a green, slightly metallic edge. The real story is in the base: ambroxan bridges the gap between warmth and cool, leather anchors everything to skin, and cedar lingers long after the rest has settled. This is a fragrance that knows what it wants to be and doesn't try to be anything else.
The evolution
The opening hits with immediacy, saffron's signature warmth arriving alongside the herbal snap of thyme. The bergamot is brief, a citrus flicker that lights the match and steps back. For the opening phase, this is spice and green herbs, bold and assertive. Then the lavender takes its position. Not soft, not sweet, structured, like pressed linen. Geranium adds its quiet green counterpoint while labdanum brings a faint resinous depth that keeps the heart from becoming merely pleasant. As time passes, the leather settles into the composition, warm and intimate, the kind of presence that only someone standing close would notice. Cedar follows, and ambroxan threads through everything, keeping the herbal notes alive beneath the woody base. The dry down leaves a clean, skin-like warmth, ambroxan's signature dry skin accord lingering on the surface, impossible to scrub out.
Cultural impact
The fragrance appeals to wearers who want leather-forward depth without heavy sweetness. Its aromatic-herbal character reads as confident rather than loud, making it suitable for cooler seasons and evening wear where that refined intensity suits the occasion. The sillage and longevity are notable, giving the scent a practical presence that endures throughout the evening without requiring reapplication.
