The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 1991, perfumer Ilias Ermenidis created Une Touche de Naf Naf for the French fashion house NafNaf. Ermenidis constructed it around a core of powdery iris, layering white florals beneath it, jasmine, orchid, lily of the valley, rose, and anchoring everything in tonka bean, vanilla, and musk. The iris brings a soft, powdery quality that feels immediately familiar, like memories of a grandparent's vanity or a beloved scarf from childhood. Jasmine contributes a heady, indolic richness that grounds the composition with warmth. Orchid adds an exotic, slightly waxy depth that distinguishes this from simpler floral arrangements. Lily of the valley contributes cool, green freshness that lifts the heavier florals. Rose provides a delicate warmth without veering into sweet territory.
The iris-powdery accord is the emotional center of this composition. It gives the fragrance its nostalgic quality, that sense of smelling something familiar before you have actually encountered it. Ermenidis achieved this through the interplay of violet-scented orris root with the cool green notes of lily of the valley. Jasmine adds body and richness, its heady floralcy balancing the ethereal quality of the lily. Rose adds a subtle warmth that prevents the whole thing from becoming too austere. The orris root brings that distinctive violet-like quality, slightly powdery and undeniably elegant.
The evolution
The bergamot opens bright and citrusy, but it does not linger. Within the first hour, the white florals take over, each asserting itself in turn rather than one dominating over the others. The iris stays present throughout, threading through everything like a watermark. As the hours pass, the florals begin to thin, becoming more transparent. The tonka bean emerges first, then the vanilla, their sweetness becoming more apparent as the top notes fade. Musk keeps everything close to the skin, ensuring the fragrance remains intimate rather than projecting outward. The drydown settles into a warm, comfortable embrace where the powdery iris remains a subtle presence beneath the vanilla and musk. What was bright and effervescent becomes something softer, a quiet warmth that lingers for hours.
Cultural impact
Une Touche de Naf Naf presents a committed approach to the powdery iris tradition. Rather than treating this as an old-fashioned or limiting category, the fragrance executes its iris core with care and attention. The result is a scent that stands as a significant contribution to its genre, demonstrating what is possible when a perfumer works with traditional materials rather than against them. The powdery iris has been a cornerstone of feminine perfumery for decades, and this fragrance honors that heritage while remaining accessible to contemporary tastes.
