The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Alexis Dadier designed Magic Fizz for NafNaf's MY FIVE, MY EMOTIONS collection, five fragrances built around different emotional registers. The brief: purity as an emotional recharge. Lightness as the goal. Dadier started with bergamot and Earl Grey, a pairing that carries the refreshing, tonic quality the concept demanded. Tomato leaf arrived next, adding an aromatic green dimension that lifts the tea rather than competing with it. The beeswax base was the risk, and the payoff. It gives the fragrance somewhere to land that isn't sweetness or woods. The result is a scent that feels honest: clean without being sterile, interesting without trying too hard.
Bergamot and tea shouldn't work together the way they do here. Bergamot's citrus brightness and Earl Grey's tannic, slightly bitter character could cancel each other out. Instead, they hold a tension that keeps the top alive longer than expected. The tomato leaf, an unusual choice for women's fragrance, adds an aromatic, almost savory green note that most people notice but can't name. They just know it smells different. The beeswax base is the real commitment. Beeswax is ancient: used in temples, candlelight, skin. In perfumery it adds a warm, mineral sweetness that rounds without softening. Here it extends the freshness of the opening into the drydown, giving Magic Fizz a second act most fresh fragrances skip.
The evolution
The opening salvo: bergamot bright and mineral, Earl Grey tannic and present. The tea doesn't hide, it announces. Tomato leaf flickers underneath, green and slightly bitter, adding an aromatic dimension that keeps the bergamot from becoming a cleaning product. Neroli arrives alongside soft lemon verbena, creating a smooth handoff between the top notes and what follows. The white florals don't overtake, they lighten, adding a quiet sweetness to the citrus. Then the beeswax. Hours of quiet warmth, mineral and close. On fabric, the beeswax leaves a faint impression that lasts a day. It smells like the scent memory itself, something that was there before you noticed.
Cultural impact
NafNaf's MY FIVE, MY EMOTIONS collection positioned Magic Fizz as part of a broader creative statement about what fragrance can do. Tea-forward compositions have existed in niche perfumery for years, Diptyque's Eau de Lierre, Bulgari's Eau Parfumée au Thé Vert, but Magic Fizz approaches the note with a different set of priorities. The combination of tea, tomato leaf, and beeswax places it in a specific register: fresh and green, but with enough complexity to reward attention. It occupies a space that feels both familiar and unexpected, the kind of scent that makes you notice what you've been smelling all along.
