The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
MITH, founded in Bangkok in 2015, crafts skin-close, memory-driven scents that blend Thai sensibility with modern perfumery. Orris Root emerged from MITH's 2022 exploration of singular botanical moments. The house collaborated with international perfumers to capture the essence of orris root, an ingredient prized across cultures for its refined, powdery character. Thai perfumery traditions, with their appreciation for natural materials and subtle composition, inform MITH's decision to center the scent on this singular note rather than mask it with complexity.
MITH's approach to Orris Root reflects a philosophy of restraint and botanical authenticity. The choice to pair clary sage with orris creates unexpected freshness within a classically powdery structure. Juniper berries add lift without sweetness, allowing the iris to remain dignified. Musk grounds the composition in skin-like warmth rather than synthetic sweetness. Vetiver provides the drydown's earthy counterpoint, while cedarwood ensures longevity without heaviness. The fragrance succeeds because each note serves the whole. It offers powdery elegance without excess, woody warmth without heaviness, and an intimate character that rewards close wearing rather than broadcast.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with the crisp, herbal clarity of clary sage, immediately joined by juniper berries' bright, pine-adjacent note and coriander's quiet spice. This opening feels clean but not sterile, aromatic but restrained. As the minutes pass, orris root emerges from beneath the herbs, its powdery violet character softening the edges of the top notes. The transition is gradual, organic. By the drydown, the powdery quality has become the dominant sensation, warmed by musk and deepened by vetiver's earthiness and cedarwood's dry woody presence. The evolution traces a path from open air to intimate closeness.
Cultural impact
Orris Root draws on the historic use of iris rhizome in Thai ceremonial practices, where the powdery aroma has long symbolised purity and contemplation. By integrating clary sage and juniper berries, MITH bridges traditional herbal reverence with contemporary minimalist aesthetics, appealing to a generation that values both heritage and modernity. The scent’s understated elegance has sparked conversations in boutique circles about the resurgence of botanical narratives in Asian perfumery, influencing emerging brands to explore locally sourced botanicals while maintaining a global appeal.
