The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Strawberry & Cream arrived in 2021, the work of MITH perfumers Jutinat Piyaweerawong and Elodie Durande. For this release, the house turned to one of fragrance's most familiar comfort zones, the strawberry-and-cream pairing. The result is closer to a soufflé: soft, warm, built for eating alone on a Tuesday afternoon. There's a gentle nuttiness that threads through the composition, keeping everything grounded rather than airborne. Almond provides the structural anchor, something that prevents the sweetness from floating away into abstraction. The ambrette in the base adds a distinctive quality, one that brings depth and keeps the drydown from settling into pure confection. It gives the fragrance a particular character that feels intimate and unhurried.
The note structure is the story. Strawberry arrives as a soufflé, cushioned by cream and vanilla, while almond adds a nutty depth that stops the sweetness from becoming dessert. Ambrette plays a significant role in the drydown, bringing a subtle musky quality that grounds the composition. It keeps the vanilla from becoming too sweet or abstract. It keeps the whole thing close to skin rather than floating off into the air. That's MITH's hand, closeness and presence, nothing performative.
The evolution
The opening is the surprise. Almond and wild berries arrive with a warm quality, closer to a real nut than sweet marzipan. It's unexpected for a fragrance called Strawberry & Cream, and it sets the tone. Wild berries follow, adding a jammy quality that feels baked rather than bright. Then the florals arrive. Freesia and jasmine bring their own character, while iris adds a powdery elegance that rounds everything out. As the heart fades, vanilla and tonka bean take over. The cream note settles in, warm and close. Ambrette plays a significant role, bringing a subtle musky quality that keeps the sweetness from becoming pure confection. It keeps the vanilla grounded. The base holds close for several hours on most skin, leaving traces of vanilla warmth into the next day.
Cultural impact
Gourmand fragrances remain a significant category in niche perfumery. Strawberry & Cream approaches this territory differently, warm and sweet, but with an understated quality. The ambrette and ambergris give it a different kind of warmth than heavy caramel-vanilla compositions. For fragrance collectors interested in how different houses approach sweet compositions, this one offers a distinctive perspective.
