The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
1996 Inez & Vinoodh was inspired by a photograph taken by Dutch photographers Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin in 1996. The image became the fragrance's namesake and its emotional core. Byredo founder Ben Gorham has built the brand on distilling memory and emotion into minimalist fragrance, rejecting ornate European traditions in favor of raw material clarity. Working with perfumer Jerome Epinette, the composition translates photographic duality into olfactory form. The opening juniper and black pepper mirror the image's cool precision while the heart iris, leather, and violet capture its warmer undertones.
The note structure reflects Byredo's commitment to raw material clarity. Juniper and black pepper open with precision, establishing the scent's identity before giving way to the softer heart. Iris and leather form the emotional core, their combination representing the photograph's duality of warm and cold. The drydown black amber, patchouli, and vanilla ground the composition, ensuring it remains close to the skin rather than projecting loudly into the room. This progression from sharp to soft mirrors the visual narrative of the Inez and Vinoodh photograph, where cool lighting meets warm skin tones.
The evolution
The fragrance evolves through three distinct phases, each echoing the photograph's layered complexity. The opening juniper berry and black pepper establish an energetic, cool presence that feels immediate and direct. As the scent develops, iris, leather, and violet emerge to create a textured, warm heart where the powdery floral quality of iris balances against leather's animalic depth. Violet threads through this phase, adding a subtle sweetness that prevents the leather from becoming too austere. The drydown introduces black amber, patchouli, and vanilla, transforming the composition from cool precision to warm intimacy. Vanilla emerges most prominently here, its creamy sweetness softening the earthiness of patchouli and creating a lingering warmth that feels like an afterimage.
Cultural impact
The 1996 Inez & Vinoodh won the 2014 FiFi Award for Best New Independent Fragrance, validating the unconventional pairing of leather with iris and violet. Its origin as a private gift for friends gives it an exclusive narrative that sets it apart in Byredo's lineup. The fragrance appeals to those who want something with artistic credibility rather than mass appeal.
