The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Maison Yusif, founded in Accra in 2017, has built its identity on translating Ghana's botanical heritage into contemporary niche scents. Working with sacred resins and ancestral spices through modern artisan techniques, the house brings a distinctly West African perspective to perfumery. For Supernova, released in 2024, perfumer Yusif Meizongo Jnr drew on this deep well of botanical knowledge, combining local spice traditions with an international vocabulary of fragrance materials. The result is a scent that feels rooted in place while reaching toward universal appeal.
The note selection in Supernova reveals a deliberate philosophy. The citrus and aquatic opening reflects a global sensibility, materials that read clearly across cultures. Bay Leaf grounds the composition in aromatic tradition, a nod to the spices that have long shaped West African perfumery. The floral heart brings balance and accessibility. The drydown with its Amber and Patchouli base speaks to longevity and depth, materials chosen for their performance and their ability to create an intimate, personal scent bubble that develops uniquely on each wearer.
The evolution
Supernova begins with an effervescent citrus and aquatic opening that announces itself confidently. Orange and Mandarin Orange lead the charge, their golden brightness softened only slightly by the unexpected sweetness of Grape. Mint prevents the citrus from becoming cloying, while Aquatic Notes keep the entire composition feeling clean and contemporary. As minutes pass, the fragrance pivots. Bay Leaf emerges as a quiet structural choice, bringing savory green notes that contrast beautifully with the bright opening. Jasmine and Rose then unfurl, their lush floralcy softened by the still-present Bay Leaf. Spicy Notes rise to meet them, adding warmth that prepares the nose for the drydown. Here, Amber takes command, its honeyed resinous quality wrapping around the final phase. Ambergris adds a subtle animalic depth, and Patchouli grounds everything with the earthy, slightly smoky character that ensures Supernova lingers long after the initial spray.
Cultural impact
Supernova reflects a growing movement in contemporary perfumery that celebrates African heritage while embracing global modernity. By integrating traditional African botanicals such as indigenous citrus varieties with marine accords, the fragrance bridges coastal cultures and urban sophistication. Its launch in 2024 sparked conversations about representation in the luxury market, encouraging brands to source ingredients ethically from African farms. The scent’s popularity among young creatives has also influenced social media trends, where users pair the fragrance with sustainable fashion, reinforcing a narrative of cultural pride and ecological awareness.
