The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
My Place landed in 2017 from Mahogany. Fanny Grau composed it, shaping bergamot and blackcurrant into a soft floral-woody chord that smells like a personal atmosphere. The opening citrus carries a crisp lift, with blackcurrant threading a tart, almost jammy sweetness beneath the bergamot's clean sparkle. From those first sprays the composition suggests something worn-in rather than newly poured, as if the fragrance had been resting on skin long before it reached the bottle. Grau's approach here favors layering over loudness, letting each ingredient settle into its neighbors instead of competing for attention. The result is a scent that settles close to the body and asks for patience.
What makes this worth slowing down for is how the wood gets handled. Palisander rosewood bridges the floral heart into the cedar-sandalwood base, giving jasmine and lily of the valley a warm floor to stand on instead of letting them float off into green sweetness. The rosewood acts almost like a tuning fork, bringing the florals into the same key as the woods waiting below. Patchouli sits underneath, barely announcing itself, adding the kind of depth that reads as skin rather than afterthought.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes belong to the citrus. Bergamot and mandarin hit cold and bright, with blackcurrant pushing a tart ribbon underneath. There's something almost mineral about the opening, like the smell of a glass that's just been washed. The blackcurrant gives the citrus a darker undertone, preventing the opening from ever feeling thin or merely sharp. Mandarin adds a sweeter pulp to the blend, rounding out the tartness with its own sunny character. By the half-hour mark the citrus thins and the florals settle in, cyclamen adding a watery coolness before jasmine arrives with its full green-honey weight. Cyclamen's translucent quality creates a brief pause, a moment of clean air before the jasmine unfolds. The jasmine then takes its time, settling in with a humid, almost tropical sweetness that feels grounded by the woods waiting below.
Cultural impact
My Place wears close enough for daily use and soft enough to feel like a personal signature rather than a statement. It's the kind of fragrance that becomes part of a routine, applied without ceremony and noticed only by those within arm's reach. The composition doesn't demand attention, but it rewards it, revealing new facets as the hours pass and the notes shift from citrus to florals to woods. Bergamot and blackcurrant open with enough brightness to feel fresh in any season, while the jasmine, lily of the valley, and cyclamen heart carries a versatility that transitions easily from morning to evening.
