The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The 001 naming was intentional. A clean start, a first chapter in Loewe's perfumery program. Released in 2017 as the masculine counterpart to 001 Woman, the fragrance arrived with the quiet confidence of a house that didn't need to shout. Emilio Valeros constructed the scent around a specific tension: citrus brightness at the opening, warm aromatic depth at the heart, and a base that settles rather than projects. The goal wasn't a statement fragrance. It was something someone would reach for daily, a scent that becomes part of how they smell.
What makes this work is the way the lavender doesn't fight the citrus. In most compositions, the aromatic note battles the top for attention, here they coexist, the orange blossom and lemon taking the sharper edge off the herbaceous warmth. The red pepper adds a quiet heat without raising the temperature. It's spice that doesn't demand you notice it. The tonka bean at the base is where the fragrance earns its longevity, sweet but grounded, powdery without becoming dusty, the kind of note that survives a full workday and still has something left on the skin the next morning.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and clean, orange blossom and lime doing what citrus does best, lifting the top of the composition with immediate freshness. The lemon adds a tartness that keeps it from becoming sweet too early. This phase lasts roughly thirty minutes before the hand-off begins. The lavender arrives not as a replacement but as a layer, settling over the citrus like something being folded in. The cinnamon and red pepper follow, warming the center without adding weight. By hour two, the drydown has taken over. The sandalwood arrives soft, almost creamy, and the tonka bean does what tonka does, binds everything together with a sweet, warm finish that smells like skin-warm fabric. The musk stays close, intimate rather than projecting. What remains after six to eight hours is that tonka-sandalwood warmth, quiet and personal, the kind of scent someone might catch on your collar and ask about without expecting an answer.
Cultural impact
Loewe 001 Man launched in 2017 as part of the Spanish house's rebranded fragrance identity. The numbered series marked a departure from Loewe's previous scent portfolio, positioning the brand as a modern luxury house with minimalist aesthetics. The 001 Man and 001 Woman duo became early examples of gender-neutral fragrance marketing in mainstream luxury. The clean bottle design, featuring a magnetic cap and minimal label, influenced subsequent releases across the industry. The fragrance's accessible price point for a luxury house helped it reach broader audiences, creating a bridge between artisanal perfumery and daily-wear accessibility.
