The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Anne Flipo created Laura in 1994, giving the house's founder her own scent. The brief carried Laura Biagiotti's own philosophy: a perfume must enhance a woman's personality but not dominate it. Flipo built the composition around that restraint, a fragrance that speaks softly, wears close, and trusts the wearer to carry the presence instead of the scent. Naming it Laura made it personal. Not a muse. Not an idea. The woman herself.
The choice of watermelon as the opening note was deliberate, it brought coolness without sharpness, sweetness without weight. Around it, blackcurrant and melon kept the top bright and aqueous, a freshness that felt modern for the era without chasing trends. The heart layered white florals and stone fruits, jasmine, lotus, water lily, white peach, creating a garden that breathes rather than overwhelms. Sandalwood, vanilla, and musk anchor the composition in warmth. The result is a scent that moves from cool to warm, from surface to skin, from fresh to intimate.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately, watermelon and blackcurrant, a bright burst that feels like morning light through thin curtains. The melon softens what could be sharp, keeping the start accessible rather than aggressive. Within minutes, the fruit begins to recede and the florals take over. Jasmine rises first, then lotus and water lily create a cool, slightly aquatic middle that carries the heart. The transition from fruit to flower is seamless, one fades as the other deepens. The drydown arrives slowly: sandalwood and vanilla emerge from beneath the florals, mingling with musk to create a powdery warmth that wraps the skin. The sillage moderates over time, projecting less as the hours pass, this is a scent that eventually becomes a secret, something only the wearer notices. Most find it holds for 4-6 hours, with moderate sillage throughout. On moisturized skin, the drydown lasts longer. On dry skin, it fades faster. Either way, what remains is warm, close, and intimate.
Cultural impact
Laura belongs to the wave of 90s fragrances that defined 'clean' femininity, fresh, sweet, approachable. The fresh and sweet character appeals to those seeking a gentle, inoffensive scent, while the 1994 launch places it squarely in an era when lightweight aquatics dominated. For many, it remains a nostalgic touchstone: the smell of someone polished, put-together, and unapologetically soft.
