The beginning
Misterious Oud arrived in 2014 as part of La Martina's Alma Coleccion Privada, a collection known for presenting layered, niche-leaning compositions. Maurizio Cerizza composed the fragrance, and you can feel the deliberate hand in how the materials shift register. This isn't a bright, crowd-pleasing oud. It leans into the resinous and smoky side, with labdanum and styrax anchoring a dark, contemplative structure while the oud name points to the territory the scent wants to occupy. Cerizza built a fragrance that wants to be read slowly, the kind of composition that earns its second hour rather than announcing its first. The interplay between the bright green-spicy opening notes and the deeper resinous base creates a tension that sustains itself well beyond the initial spray.
What's interesting here is the restraint around the oud itself. Misterious Oud lets pink pepper and galbanum set a sharp, almost green opening, then lets styrax and labdanum build a resinous bridge that reads more like old church wood than any overt display of agarwood character. The oud is implied rather than shouted. It lives in guaiac wood and amyris more than in any literal agarwood note, and that choice gives the composition a distinctively woody, almost meditative quality. The result is a woody-spicy composition with an aromatic backbone that feels considered and grounded.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are sharp and a little confrontational. Pink pepper lands first, then cinnamon and elemi resin push through with a green galbanum edge that almost smells of crushed stems. The opening has that just-cracked quality, like a twig snapped in cold air. Around the 20-minute mark, the resin notes, styrax and labdanum, take over and the composition darkens noticeably. There's a leathery, almost incense-like quality here that pulls the fragrance away from its spicy start and into something older. This is where most people decide whether Misterious Oud is for them. The heart phase settles into its stride with the guaiac wood, amyris, and vetiver creating a smoky, slightly sweet base that anchors everything above it. Cashmeran adds a clean musk underneath, and the vanilla stays present but never overwhelms.
