Isaac Sinclair built 010 Ode À Cologne as a love letter to Cologne, Germany, the city that gave the world eau de cologne centuries ago. Released in 2024 by L'envie Parfums, the composition reads as a reinterpretation rather than a reproduction. The numbered cataloging approach carries through this release, with 010 occupying its own slot in a sequence that borrows its sense of order from somewhere between a film archive and a mixtape. What Sinclair seems to reach for is the citrus-herbal backbone that defined cologne for generations, then carried that skeleton into a warmer, spiced register without losing the lift that makes cologne cologne.
The construction leans on a classic top-note trio of bergamot, petitgrain, and Sicilian lemon, then pivots hard into a spiced heart that traditional colognes rarely attempt. Cardamom, nutmeg, black pepper, and ginger stack up against neroli and violet, creating warmth in the middle that the citrus opens the door for.
The evolution
The first five minutes belong entirely to the citrus. Bergamot and Sicilian lemon arrive at full brightness, with petitgrain threading a green bitterness underneath. Cold, clean, almost bracing, like pressing your face against a window in early spring. Around the ten-minute mark, the spices begin to surface. Cardamom leads, warm and slightly sweet, followed by nutmeg and a sharp flick of black pepper.
