The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Rayhaan bridges traditional Middle Eastern perfumery with modern global sensibilities. Founded in 2020 by Khalid Kalsekar, son of Salim Kalsekar, director of Rasasi Fragrance House, the brand approaches fragrance as something that should match individual identity. Terra centers on earth, actual earth, the kind found in ancient markets and desert nights. The structure centers on cardamom, bergamot, and lemon in the opening, supported by frankincense, elemi resin, and sichuan pepper. A heart of coriander, cumin, orange blossom, patchouli, saffron, star anise, geranium, rose, and vermouth develops before settling into a base of labdanum, amber, benzoin, frankincense, maltol, myrrh, vanilla, ambergris, birch, oud, and musk. Khalid Kalsekar founded Rayhaan in 2020 with this vision in mind.
The note selection reflects a deliberate philosophy of earth, warmth, and resinous depth. Cardamom and cumin anchor the composition with their aromatic, slightly spicy character, while saffron and star anise provide warm, exotic complexity. The florals, orange blossom and rose, offer subtle counterweight to the cumin and coriander's earthiness, preventing the composition from becoming too heavy. Labdanum, oud, and frankincense ground the entire structure in Middle Eastern tradition, while vanilla, maltol, and benzoin add warmth that makes the depth approachable rather than imposing.
The evolution
Terra unfolds as a sensory map of the earth itself. The opening arrives like dust and warm clay, cardamom and bergamot creating an immediate sense of mineral depth, lemon brightening the blend without softening it. Frankincense and elemi resin add weight, the smell of incense in ancient marketplaces, while sichuan pepper provides an immediate spark of heat that keeps the opening dynamic rather than static. As the heart develops, coriander and cumin introduce the deep, spicy character of earth, saffron and star anise adding their warm, slightly sweet spice. Orange blossom and rose introduce subtle floral notes, their delicate character tempering the cumin and coriander's earthiness. Patchouli grounds everything with its signature earthy, slightly bitter character, with geranium and vermouth adding complexity. The transition to the drydown happens smoothly, labdanum and benzoin arriving as sticky, resinous elements that feel like earth itself hardening after rain.
Cultural impact
Spiced oriental fragrances have deep roots in Middle Eastern perfumery traditions, where cardamom and warm spices have been used for centuries in both perfumery and cuisine. The Gulf region's appreciation for bold, long-lasting fragrances stems from cultural practices where scent is an important part of personal presentation and hospitality. Terra aligns with these traditional preferences for strong, complex oriental fragrances.
