The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Energy Place Smiley is part of L'envie Parfums' collaboration with the Smiley brand, a pairing that traded in mood over mythology. The house built its approach around titles pulled from pop culture and borrowed moments, with the Smiley collaboration bringing the visual language, the rounded typography, the optimism. L'envie brought the perfumery, with Fanny Grau and Isaac Sinclair listed as the perfumers on a citrus-aromatic composition that does what the name suggests: puts energy into a bottle. The composition reads like a study in upward motion. Lemongrass, orange, and a grassy note stack at the top like sunlight through a window.
Sweetgrass is unusual in mainstream perfumery, and that's precisely the point. The choice of a grassy botanical at the top of the composition signals something: this isn't chasing the template that so many bright, citrus-led releases fall into. The combination of lemongrass and the grassy top note creates a double-green effect that reads as genuinely herbal without tipping into aromatherapy territory. It's green without being sharp, aromatic without being aggressive. Then the iris and hedione in the heart do something most citrus fragrances don't bother with: they add depth.
The evolution
Energy Place Smiley opens with a bright burst of orange and lemongrass that feels like stepping into a sunny kitchen on a slow morning. As the citrus settles, the green, slightly grassy sweetness rises to the surface, softening the energy without dulling it. Over time the grassy element lends a calm warmth that keeps the wearer grounded, a quiet hay-adjacent quality that settles just below the brighter notes rather than competing with them. The result is a scent that moves from bright and awake to quietly content without losing its cheerful center, and the journey from sharp citrus opening to that softer, grounded close happens gradually enough that you register the shift without consciously tracking it.
Cultural impact
The collaboration context between L'envie Parfums and the globally recognized Smiley visual identity gives Energy Place Smiley a cultural shorthand that extends beyond typical niche releases. The Smiley branding carries decades of optimistic, rounded-typography recognition, and pairing that visual language with a citrus-aromatic composition creates a product that communicates mood before you even spray it. The fragrance reads as a mood object as much as a scent, built around a feeling of forward motion and good cheer rather than a traditional perfumery narrative.
