The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Curious Amber arrived in 2020 from Keiko Mecheri. The fragrance opens with a bright burst of bergamot and white rum, the citrus immediacy of the bergamot tempered by the warmth of the rum beneath it. As the top notes settle, coriander and saffron emerge to add an edge that reads as curiosity rather than aggression. There's an interplay here that rewards attention: the bergamot invites you in, the rum keeps things warm, and the saffron-coriander pairing adds a complexity that asks something of you before it fully rewards. The result is a fragrance with layers to discover, one that reveals more the more you wear it.
What makes this work is the way the heart holds together. Cocoa and rose could go sweet in the wrong hands, but here they support the saffron rather than compete with it. The saffron carries a slight medicinal edge, a sharpness that lifts the composition away from dessert territory and into something more complex. Then the base arrives: amber layered over benzoin, frankincense, and labdanum. Tobacco brings its toffee-like warmth without becoming the whole story. Vanilla threads through everything, keeping the resins from becoming heavy. It's an oriental that earned its name, curious about what amber can be when you stop playing it safe.
The evolution
The opening arrives fast, bergamot and black pepper over white rum. The rum gives it a warmth that's almost physical, like the heat of skin. The bergamot fades as the pepper settles into the background, shifting the character of the top notes without losing the initial brightness entirely. The heart phase is where Curious Amber earns its keep. Cocoa appears first, then rose, a powdery warmth that surprises against the saffron's medicinal lift. The coriander holds throughout, giving the heart an edge that keeps everything from going flat. This is the phase that defines the fragrance, where the promised amber becomes something more complex than expected. The drydown brings amber at last. Amber over benzoin and frankincense, with labdanum adding a resinous depth that reads as primal beneath the polish. The tobacco note is toffee-like rather than smoky, sweet without being cloying.
Cultural impact
Curious Amber sits in a curious position. The 2020 launch brought a fragrance with a different take on amber, one built around an unexpected saffron-coriander pairing in the heart. This combination offers something more interesting than the standard vanilla-oud template, giving the fragrance a character that stands apart from more conventional amber interpretations. Wearers tend to either connect with it immediately or find it too strange for regular wear. The heart notes especially divide opinion, with the cocoa-rose-saffron interplay creating a powdery warmth that some find irresistible and others find too sharp.
