The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Arthur Clay Emrick launched Top Heavy in 2023, and the name does what it says on the tin. Twelve top notes. Eight heart notes. A base of Mysore sandalwood, natural musk, palo santo, and Malayan oud. It's a composition that stacks weight at the top and dares the wearer to keep up. The fragrance was released through Jinx Smells, the upstate New York house Emrick founded on a philosophy of natural materials and uncompromising depth. Top Heavy reads like an extension of that mission: a composition built from assertive ingredients, layered with intention. The structure is heavy where it counts, light where it breathes, and every note is allowed to speak without being drowned out.
The interesting move here is the coffee blossom. It's rare in niche perfumery, and Emrick places it in a context that brings out its green, slightly bitter character. The chili pepper in the opening does similar work: it adds heat that smells botanical, not culinary. That botanical heat weaves through the citrus and spice opening without ever tipping into food territory, setting a tone that's alive and a little dangerous from the first spray. Then there's the oud. Malayan oud paired with Mysore sandalwood and palo santo gives the drydown a density that's almost devotional.
The evolution
The opening is a wall of sound. Juniper berries and litsea cubeba and lemon all hit at once, cut through by cinnamon and clove and bay leaf and chili. There's neroli and orange blossom trying to lighten things up, but they lose. Pine edges through. It's busy, deliberately busy, and anyone who wants a polite opening should look elsewhere. The citrus trio, juniper, litsea cubeba, and lemon, creates a brightness that gets immediately complicated by the spice cluster. Cinnamon brings warmth, clove adds depth, bay leaf contributes an herbal edge, and the chili arrives like a spark. The neroli and orange blossom work hard to keep things from going dark, but the sheer volume of spice and citrus tips the balance toward intensity. As the composition settles, the coffee blossom surfaces. It's not the espresso-booth coffee of mainstream perfumery.
Cultural impact
Top Heavy is a Patreon-exclusive release through Jinx Smells, which means it never appeared on retail shelves. That direct-to-collector model places it in a specific category of niche fragrance, one where the perfumer and the audience maintain a closer relationship than the standard distribution chain allows. The twelve top notes, the unusual presence of coffee blossom, and the base of Mysore sandalwood, natural musk, palo santo, and Malayan oud all signal a composition built for people who want intensity and material honesty.
