Why it exists.
The beginning
Jasper Conran II arrived in 2005, a follow-up to the designer's debut fragrances from 2003. II arrived alongside this second chapter, building on what had come before with a brighter, more aromatic profile than the original. The composition leans into herbal territory from the very first spray, trading soft for sharp. Where earlier expressions stayed close to the skin, this one opens outward, bringing lemon verbena and basil to the front of the structure. The result feels like an extension of the same sensibility, just turned up a notch in brightness and herbal intensity. It's a confident sequel, offering something a little louder without abandoning the clean lines that defined the debut.
The structure of II is deceptively simple. Lemon verbena and basil lead with that sharp green clarity, a combination of bright citrus and aromatic herb. The heart softens it with geranium and jasmine, classic floral territory, but ylang-ylang adds a tropical weight that keeps it grounded. Vetiver and amber in the base pull it back toward something earthy and warm. The herbal sharpness up top and the warm amber underneath create a kind of push and pull. The green lifts, the base anchors, and the florals in the middle keep both sides honest.
The evolution
The first fifteen minutes are all green. Lemon verbena arrives sharp and slightly bitter, almost like the zest rubbed between your fingers. Basil sits beside it, adding that peppery, slightly anise edge. Then the florals start arriving, geranium first, bringing a rosy, leafy quality that softens the opening without dulling it. Jasmine and ylang-ylang bloom underneath, adding creaminess and a touch of tropical warmth. Within an hour, the composition shifts noticeably. The citrus recedes, the herbs settle, and the base notes emerge, amber warming everything up, vetiver adding that dry, earthy backbone, musk smoothing the edges. Peony in the base gives it a soft, powdery finish. On skin, the fragrance moves steadily from bright and green to warm and slightly woody, a slow unfolding rather than a sudden shift.
