The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Neuquen is a JAFRA men's woody launched in 2012, a confident, unfussy masculine that wears like a good sport jacket: structured, warm, never loud. The composition leans on accessible building blocks, the kind of familiar aromatic and woody material that reads as masculine without leaning on heavy leather or tobacco codes. What comes out of the bottle is clean and deliberate, the opening pulling bright citrus and a measured dusting of spice before the wood takes over. On skin the transition is gradual, the citrus and pepper lifting off in the first twenty minutes while the warmer base notes begin to register underneath, and the whole thing settles into a smooth, slightly creamy drydown that holds close without disappearing.
What makes Neuquen interesting structurally is the way it balances two opposing temperature zones. The opening runs cool and sharp, bergamot and mandarin stacked against black pepper and nutmeg, while the base tilts deep and resinous with sandalwood, amber, and patchouli. The middle bridges them with an unusual move: red apple, sitting alongside lavender and geranium, which are the traditional masculine-fougère anchors. That apple note gives the heart a lifted quality, adding a fruit-skin crispness that keeps the lavender from going soapy and the geranium from turning too green.
The evolution
The first fifteen minutes are all citrus snap and pepper heat, mandarin bright on top, nutmeg warming underneath, bergamot keeping it from feeling too food-court. By the thirty-minute mark the apple shows up, surprisingly clean and tart, like biting into one at room temperature, and it cuts through the lavender without softening it. The middle hour is where the composition finds its footing: geranium adds a faint green tea bitterness, the apple recedes, and the sandalwood begins to anchor from below. Two hours in, the base takes over completely. Patchouli and cedar do the heavy structural work, amber rounds the edges, and moss adds a damp forest-floor undertone. By hour four it's a skin scent, close and warm, the musk having pulled everything inward. What lasts into the next morning is mostly sandalwood and a faint amber ghost on the inside of the wrist.
Cultural impact
Since its 2012 launch, Neuquen has been part of JAFRA's men's fragrance offering, a woody-aromatic that carries a distinctly warm and approachable character. The composition speaks to a particular kind of wearer, one who values a scent that feels grounded and masculine without tipping into the heavier tobacco or leather territory. Within the JAFRA lineup, Neuquen stands out for its balance of bright top notes against a deep resinous base, a contrast that gives the fragrance a versatile range.
