The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Christophe Raynaud set out to capture the moment when golden smoke rises from incandescent water and molten rock, a concept rooted in Issey Miyake's long-standing water motif. The brief called for labdanum and rose to establish an immediate warmth, then built outward through spiced complexity before arriving at a grounded, woody conclusion. Raynaud's expertise shaped the composition's logical progression from soft opening to confident drydown, ensuring each phase feels intentional rather than accidental.
The pairing of labdanum and rose reflects a deliberate contrast between resinous depth and floral softness. Pink pepper and cumin were chosen to bridge these elements without forcing cohesion, allowing each note to read clearly within the composition. The woody drydown completes the arc by grounding all that came before in warmth that feels natural rather than constructed, making the fragrance feel both structured and effortless.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with labdanum and rose establishing a warm, resinous-floral foundation that feels both ancient and refined. Pink pepper and cumin arrive to add texture and a quiet complexity, introducing a subtle heat that distinguishes the heart from typical aquatic or fresh compositions. As time passes, vetiver and leather anchor the scent firmly into woody territory, with sandalwood adding a creamy, lingering warmth that persists well beyond initial application. The evolution moves from soft and inviting to grounded and assured.
Cultural impact
Since its debut, the scent has been praised for its bold amber‑smoke character, offering a distinctive presence among oriental fragrances. Wearers note its ability to stand out in cooler months, making it a compelling choice for those seeking a smoky, confident fragrance. The composition draws attention for its unique balance of traditional incense notes with contemporary styling, creating a scent that feels both timeless and of the moment. Its reception among enthusiasts reflects an appreciation for fragrances that challenge conventions while remaining approachable and wearable.
