The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The One launched in 2008 as Dolce&Gabbana's warm amber ode to timeless romance, the fragrance for anniversaries and grand gestures. The One Mysterious Night takes the same name and flips it entirely. Same house, same ambition, different hours. This is The One for after the dinner, after the goodnight text, after the plans change. Jean Christophe Herault built this one for 2018, the year the original had aged into legend and the house wanted something with the same confidence but none of the nostalgia. The brief was clear: make something that felt earned by the dark.
The pairing of rose absolute with agarwood is the kind of combination that requires guts. Rose is associated with softness, with florals that soften edges. Oud is none of those things, it's resinous, animalic, dense. Putting them together is an argument about what masculinity in fragrance actually means. The clary sage keeps things slightly herbal, slightly green, preventing the rose from becoming syrupy and the oud from becoming too heavy. Meanwhile, the saffron grounds the whole thing in spice without letting it tip into sweetness. It's a composition that refuses to choose sides.
The evolution
The opening announces itself without apology. Saffron and grapefruit arrive together, sharp, bright, almost metallic. The grapefruit fades within twenty minutes, leaving the saffron to warm up against the skin. Then the rose comes in, and this is where the fragrance earns its name. It's not a delicate rose. It's an absolute, dense and rich and willing to dominate. The oud meets it halfway, adding depth without darkness. For the next three to four hours, this is the heart of the fragrance, rose and oud in conversation, with clary sage occasionally interrupting. The drydown is where it settles. Amber and tonka bean arrive last, pulling everything into warmth that stays close to the skin. The labdanum adds a faint resinous quality. This is a fragrance that lingers in clothes, in hair, in rooms you've already left.
Cultural impact
The One line has become one of Dolce&Gabbana's most recognized fragrance families, spanning multiple flankers and positioning itself as the house's evening-ready collection. The Mysterious Night entry sits at the richer, more complex end of that spectrum, designed for men who want presence without having to ask for it.
