The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Illamasqua launched its inaugural fragrance in 2011 with the original Freak, a bold declaration of the brand's theatrical DNA rooted in professional makeup artistry. Two years later, in 2013, the house returned to collaboration with perfumer Azzi Glasser to create Freak Scarab, a scent that channels the brand's love of contrast and artistic rebellion. The beetle-shaped bottle references scarab mythology and transformation, positioning the fragrance as a wearable talisman for those who embrace their shadow side.
The note architecture reflects a philosophy of controlled chaos, beginning with accessible floral-citrus brightness before descending into darker territory. Neroli and ylang create immediate appeal while jasmine and honeysuckle establish emotional depth. The final drydown of plum, leather, and star anise serves as the payoff, transforming the scent into something that demands attention rather than seeking it. This structure mirrors the brand's makeup artistry roots, where transformation is the goal and subtlety is optional.
The evolution
The scent journey begins with neroli and ylang-ylang creating an initial brightness that feels at odds with the darkness promised by the name. Orange provides a sharp citrus entry before ylang's tropical sweetness emerges. The heart unfolds with jasmine as the dominant voice, its heady indolic character amplified by honeysuckle's romantic sweetness and the nocturnal mystery of night blooming cereus. Artemisia adds a surprising green, slightly bitter counterpoint that prevents the heart from becoming merely pretty. The drydown marks a dramatic shift as plum introduces a dark, fermented sweetness that blends with leather's animalic warmth while geranium contributes a green-rosy nuance, moss adds earthiness, and star anise delivers a lingering spiced finish that commands attention.
Cultural impact
Freak Scarab quickly became a cult favorite among niche collectors, praised for its unapologetic sweet‑spicy contrast. Wearers describe it as "Enchant. Captivate. Corrupt.", a tagline that mirrors Illamasqua’s theatrical ethos. Its bold plum‑leather core sets it apart from more restrained chypres, earning it a place on many “must‑try” lists for those who crave a statement scent.
