The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Autour de Minuit, around midnight, was created by Delphine Jelk and Philippe Romano for women who know that the most honest conversations happen after twelve. Not the party itself, but the threshold: when the music softens, the lights go lower, and what remains is something real. The name says everything. This is the fragrance for the hour most people forget to plan for.
What makes Autour de Minuit stand apart is its willingness to let oud and frankincense occupy the same space as raspberry and rose. Fruity sweetness tempered by smoky resin. Warm woods that don't announce themselves. The heart of rose absolute gives it a femininity that could have gone soft, the saffron and incense keep it from arriving too politely. It's a balancing act that earns its late-night positioning.
The evolution
The opening hits pink pepper first, clean, slightly biting, before mandarin orange slips in to smooth the edges. Within minutes, raspberry appears and the composition shifts. The fruit doesn't dominate; it tempers the incoming saffron and frankincense, keeping those spices from reading too medicinal. Rose absolute arrives mid-drydown, giving the heart a warm, slightly powdery floral quality that bridges the transition. Then the base takes over: oud and sandalwood create a creamy, smoky foundation while vanilla extends everything. Patchouli keeps it earthy. Four to six hours later, the skin holds something close, intimate, and quietly persistent, the kind of drydown that lingers like a conversation worth having.
Cultural impact
Autour de Minuit sits comfortably within ID Parfums' broader exploration of oriental territory, part of a collection that includes travel-inspired scents ranging from Madras to the Andes. Rather than competing in the ultra-heavy oud market, this 2015 release takes a more measured approach: warm and present without overwhelming. The combination of fruity heart with smoky base appeals to wearers who want oriental character without the usual intensity.
