The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Alexandra Kosinski received a commission from ID Parfums in 2011 to capture a fleeting travel memory in liquid form. The brief was deceptively simple: translate a sun-drenched afternoon into something wearable. Kosinski drew inspiration from Mediterranean coastlines where citrus trees grow alongside floral gardens, and she began with bergamot as her foundational material, paired with the watery sweetness of fresh pear to evoke brightness without sweetness overload. Freesia entered early in the brief as a bridging element, something airy enough to connect the citrus top to the fuller florals beneath.
Kosinski chose magnolia and jasmine for the heart not as a default floral pairing but because their combined weight provides necessary contrast to the bright, lifting opening. Bergamot and ambergris anchor opposite ends of the composition, creating a natural call-and-response structure. The cedarwood and musk base serves a dual purpose: it extends wear time significantly while also providing the structural backbone that keeps the lighter top notes from disappearing too quickly. The overall effect is coherent without being clever, which is appropriate for a fragrance meant to translate travel memory into something effortless and portable.
The evolution
The fragrance opens on bergamot and pear, two materials that project immediately and loudly, creating a sparkling, sun-drenched introduction. Freesia softens the citrus brightness without contributing much of its own identity. Within minutes, the pear fades and magnolia emerges, its thick, waxy petals reading as creamy rather than green. Jasmine arrives alongside, adding a faint animalic undertone that gives the heart depth. Cedarwood announces itself in the drydown before the florals fully depart, its dry character a deliberate counterpoint to the warmth that musk and ambergris build beneath it. Ambergris provides the final twist, lending a briny mineral quality that feels earned rather than ornamental.
Cultural impact
Since its 2011 debut, Secrets de Volupte has resonated with travelers and city‑dwellers alike, capturing the excitement of new destinations through its bright bergamot and pear opening. The fragrance’s blend of crisp citrus and soft white florals reflects a modern, mobile lifestyle, appealing to a generation that values both spontaneity and elegance. Its moderate sillage and approachable longevity have made it a staple in boutique selections across Europe and Asia, where it often appears in curated seasonal displays that celebrate spring’s renewal.
