The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ame Toscane Fantaisie Baroque arrived in 2009 as a reimagining of the original Ame Toscane, which ID Parfums launched thirteen years earlier. Fantaisie Baroque narrows the focus to a single material: Florentine iris, the powdery, woody root that gives Tuscan perfumery its signature. The baroque designation speaks to its character within the line, elevating it as a statement piece that stands apart. This was a limited run, produced once and not repeated.
The iris absolute used here is distinctive: derived from the orris root, it carries a violet-powder character. Magnolia adds creamy, slightly green depth to the heart, while sandalwood provides a grounded base. Blackcurrant and peach top notes arrive tart rather than sweet, giving the opening a brightness that prevents the whole composition from becoming overly soft. The overall structure rewards attentive wear rather than presenting as a straightforward powdery floral.
The evolution
The opening is tart and fruity, blackcurrant pulling against peach's softer sweetness. The tartness provides a brightness that prevents the whole composition from becoming overly sweet. Once the iris emerges, it brings powdery warmth to the heart without sharpness or soapiness. Magnolia weaves through, adding creaminess that smooths the transition. As the florals settle, a translucent veil forms, present but not pressing. The base gradually reveals vanilla warming against sandalwood and musk, creating a lingering powdery warmth on skin.
Cultural impact
Fantaisie Baroque stands apart as an ornate counterpart to the 1996 original, distinguished by its baroque character and collector status. The original serves as the reference point for the line, while this reinterpretation commands attention through its intricate composition rather than sheer projection. Moderate sillage means it doesn't demand a room, but those who discover it tend to appreciate its subtlety. The powder whispers rather than shouts.
