The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The formula originated as a conversation between Olivia Bransbourg and perfumer Christine Nagel in 2006, built around an editorial project. Then the project disappeared. The formula disappeared. Everything was lost until someone found a remainder bottle in a drawer and handed it to Shyamala Maisondieu with a simple question: can you bring this back? Ten years had passed. The ingredients remained, but Maisondieu approached the reconstruction with her own perspective, seeking to continue the spirit of the original rather than simply recreate it. The fourth opus in the Attache-Moi collection arrived in 2017, carrying the weight of its own lost history. What emerged was a fragrance that honors its origins while finding its own identity in the present.
What makes ICI & LA structurally unusual is the beeswax, not as a decorative note but as a structural pillar. In perfumery, beeswax reads as warm, slightly honeyed, faintly animalic. Here it anchors the entire drydown, giving the vanilla and incense something to adhere to instead of floating free. The chili pepper in the heart is dosed with restraint: enough to register as heat, not enough to burn. The ylang-ylang acts as a bridge between the sharp top and the deep base, its creamy floralcy smoothing a transition that could otherwise feel jagged. This is a composition built around negotiation, between freshness and warmth, between spice and powder, between here and there.
The evolution
It opens sharp and bright, bergamot first, then the two peppers arriving in quick succession. Pink pepper adds a barely-there sweetness while black pepper brings the heat. Before long the orange leaf and angelica soften the edges. The heart is where ICI & LA reveals its intent. Chili pepper and nutmeg arrive with quiet confidence, ylang-ylang threading through like a ribbon of warm cream. Jasmine appears almost at the edges, not leading but present. Then the beeswax takes over, and the whole fragrance pivots. The drydown settles into incense and vanilla wrapped in oakmoss and cedar, the musk-ambrette giving it staying power without weight. As the hours pass, the initial sharpness fades into something warmer and more intimate, the spices mellowing while the creamy ylang-ylang and beeswax hold their ground.
Cultural impact
ICI & LA occupies an unusual position in the niche landscape: a fragrance born from loss and reinvention rather than market timing. Wearers gravitate toward ICI & LA for its refusal to resolve cleanly between fresh and warm, between here and there. The Attache-Moi collection functions as a sustained exploration of olfactory memory, each installment building on what came before while striking out in new directions. There is something compelling about a scent that refuses to choose sides, that holds two opposing impulses in balance without forcing resolution.
