The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Fleur De Mèmoire launched in 2023, composed by Justin James for House Of James. The name points directly to remembrance, while its composition invites a close reading of scent as a personal record. The result joins the freshness of melon and citrus with the soft darkness of chocolate, then lets cyclamen, geranium, jasmine, rose and violet unfold into a fuller floral heart. Green tea adds a clean, lightly bitter edge to the fruit, balancing the chocolate so the opening remains bright rather than becoming overly sweet. Acacia and lily of the valley contribute gentle softness, while oakmoss lends a green, earthy depth. Woody notes complete the composition with a dry, lasting texture, giving the fragrance a polished floral-woody character.
The unusual part is the contrast at the center of this composition. Chocolate supplies a rounded, dessert-like darkness beside green tea and melon, stopping the floral heart from becoming overly sweet or conventional. Citrus lifts the opening, while rose, jasmine and violet add a layered white-floral glow. Oakmoss then pulls everything back toward earth. As the fragrance develops, the bright fruit and citrus facets soften, allowing the chocolate to settle into a more subtle sweetness.
The evolution
The first impression is immediately lively: melon and citrus bring a juicy, almost crystalline brightness, with green tea keeping it from turning cloying. Chocolate appears as a soft shadow rather than a heavy sweetness, giving the opening a curious tension between fresh fruit and dessert. As the scent settles, cyclamen, geranium, jasmine, rose and violet replace that brightness with a layered floral heart. Rose and violet bring powder and color, while jasmine adds a clean white-flower lift. The base then takes over gradually. Acacia and lily of the valley stay soft and close, adding delicate sweetness and a smooth floral texture. Oakmoss introduces a green, earthy edge that keeps the composition from becoming a simple bouquet, bringing a deeper, more mineral quality to the drydown. Woody notes remain as the final trace, leaving a soft floral-woody impression.
Cultural impact
Fleur De Mèmoire offers an intimate approach to fragrance through the meeting of fresh fruit, green tea and chocolate with a varied floral heart. Melon and citrus create an immediately bright opening, while green tea introduces a clean, lightly bitter counterpoint. Chocolate adds rounded sweetness without obscuring the lighter notes. Cyclamen, geranium, jasmine, rose and violet then build a layered floral center, each contributing a distinct texture within the bouquet. Acacia and lily of the valley soften the composition, while oakmoss and woody notes lend an earthy, polished finish.
The House
House Of JamesHouse Of James is an Australian fragrance house founded by Justin James in 2019. The label releases limited‑edition scents that echo personal moments and Australian landscapes. Since its debut, the brand has introduced a steady stream of compositions, from the coastal‑inspired Sun King (2019) to the experimental Gelora (2024). Each bottle arrives from a modest studio in Sydney, where the founder blends narrative and scent without relying on mass‑market distribution. The collection now spans more than a dozen releases, each positioned as a standalone story rather than part of a larger house line.
