The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Audacity entered the world in 2024, composed by Justin James for House Of James. The fragrance is built around a striking meeting of cool florals, green notes, moss, and dark woods, a concept that gives the name its particular edge. The composition opens with champa flower, cucumber, and violet, then grounds that brightness with vetiver, cedar, and oakmoss. Cucumber lends a crisp, watery snap, while champa flower brings a creamy floral body and violet adds a soft, powdery shade. As the scent develops, vetiver introduces a dry, earthy quality, and cedar with oakmoss lends a bark-like, mossy texture to the base. The result suits anyone drawn to fragrance that communicates without raising its voice.
What makes Audacity interesting is the tension between its opening and its base. Cucumber and champa flower bring a wet, green freshness, while violet adds a powdery floral shadow. Together they create a cool, green floral opening with a soft edge, the cucumber bright and transparent against the rounder champa flower. Then vetiver shifts the composition toward earth, and cedar with oakmoss gives it a dry, bark-like footing. That movement from bright to grounded makes the scent feel layered without becoming fussy.
The evolution
Audacity begins with the briskness of cucumber and the creamy floral lift of champa flower. Violet soon pulls the opening inward, adding a cool, powdery shade that feels more intimate than sweet. Dew Drop carries that wet-floral impression forward, while the heart's floral notes soften the edges. Together they create the impression of damp greenery broken by soft petals, a combination that feels fresh and clean rather than dense. Vetiver arrives as the composition gains depth, replacing watery brightness with a dry, earthy line. The green and floral notes recede gradually, giving way to a warmer, more textured phase in which the fragrance reads closer to bark, moss, and turned earth. By the drydown, cedar and oakmoss have taken over. The result is less like a garden after rain than a shaded path beneath damp trees, with mossy texture and dark wood lingering close to the skin.
Cultural impact
Audacity's 2024 Wild Card Award from the Asia Perfume Foundation marks a notable recognition for the release. The fragrance itself brings together floral polish and earthy structure in a single composition, pairing champa flower, cucumber, and violet with vetiver, cedar, and oakmoss. It opens cool and green, then settles into a dry, mossy base that stays close to the skin, making it well suited to discovery by anyone drawn to fragrances that move between freshness and depth without settling into a single note.
The House
House Of JamesHouse Of James is an Australian fragrance house founded by Justin James in 2019. The label releases limited‑edition scents that echo personal moments and Australian landscapes. Since its debut, the brand has introduced a steady stream of compositions, from the coastal‑inspired Sun King (2019) to the experimental Gelora (2024). Each bottle arrives from a modest studio in Sydney, where the founder blends narrative and scent without relying on mass‑market distribution. The collection now spans more than a dozen releases, each positioned as a standalone story rather than part of a larger house line.
