The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Retrograde arrived in 2024 from Justin James, the Australian perfumer who founded House Of James in 2019. The house treats scent as a diary entry, and Retrograde reads like a chapter kept after the fire has burned down: a study of warmth returning slowly, with smoke, vanilla and sandalwood already in place. Its unisex profile comes from that shared emotional register rather than a gender code. Nothing here needs a loud introduction. The concept lives in texture, restraint and the way a familiar sweet accord changes character when placed beside wood, amber and smoke.
The interesting part is the handoff between textures. Cashmere Wood gives the composition softness, while Gourmand Accord introduces a edible warmth that keeps it from feeling merely woody. Sandalwood and smoke frame that sweetness from opposite directions. The result is less like dessert than the memory of dessert after the room has cooled. Vanilla supplies roundness without losing the composition's dry edge, and the final woods provide structure beneath the powdery, amber-toned centre.
The evolution
The opening lands with a broad woody warmth. Sandalwood makes the first impression smooth and substantial, vanilla gives it a soft center, and smoke threads through both without dominating. As the scent develops, Cashmere Wood comes forward, pulling the composition toward brushed fabric and quiet luxury. Gourmand Accord adds a rounded, gently sweet impression, almost edible but not overtly sugary. Then amber and cedar gradually take over, sharpening the edges and giving the lingering trail more depth. Smoke remains the most distinctive thread, shifting from an obvious opening note into a faint trace among the woods. By the 4-6 hour mark, the fragrance has settled close to the skin: soft, woody and faintly sweet, with vanilla and amber doing the last quiet work.
Cultural impact
House Of James occupies a quietly singular corner of independent perfumery, where each release is presented as a standalone story rather than a mass-market scent. Retrograde fits that culture through its tactile, diary-like mood and its balance of smoke, sweetness and wood. For wearers drawn to fragrance as atmosphere rather than accessory, it offers an intimate alternative: polished enough for close quarters, but distinctive enough to leave an impression.
The House
House Of JamesHouse Of James is an Australian fragrance house founded by Justin James in 2019. The label releases limited‑edition scents that echo personal moments and Australian landscapes. Since its debut, the brand has introduced a steady stream of compositions, from the coastal‑inspired Sun King (2019) to the experimental Gelora (2024). Each bottle arrives from a modest studio in Sydney, where the founder blends narrative and scent without relying on mass‑market distribution. The collection now spans more than a dozen releases, each positioned as a standalone story rather than part of a larger house line.
