The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Henry Cremona composed Un Bello for Henry Jacques, translating "a beautiful one" into a composition that feels like catching someone at their most unguarded. The aldehydes arrive like morning light on linen, while mirabelle plum and grapefruit keep the whole thing from floating too far into fantasy. This was a maison that spent nearly half a century crafting bespoke scents for a closed circle, and Un Bello came as a quiet offering from within that world. Cremona's hand is felt in the restraint, the way the florals never shout, the way the vanilla waits its turn, the way the musk holds everything in a gentle, almost maternal grip. Un Bello wears its sophistication quietly, never demanding the room's attention, content to live in the space between skin and air.
What makes Un Bello worth attention is its aldehydic-fruital balance, a combination that can sometimes feel like memory and now living side by side. The mirabelle plum is a rare choice, with a stone-fruit tartness that keeps the sweetness from becoming cloying. It brings a quiet complexity that anchors the brighter notes without ever weighing them down. Magnolia adds a creamy, lemony softness without the indolic heaviness of white jasmine, lending a polished clarity to the heart.
The evolution
The opening belongs entirely to the aldehydes. They arrive bright, almost metallic, like the fizz of opening a cold bottle. Grapefruit cuts through with citrus snap while mirabelle plum softens the edges, creating an opening that smells of celebration and fresh fruit in equal measure. The aldehydes hold their brilliance for a while, shimmering above the fruit, giving the first impression its characteristic sparkle. As time passes, the aldehydes recede and magnolia takes the wheel, creamy and slightly lemon-edged, with ylang-ylang adding a warm, almost banana-like sweetness underneath. Violet leaf brings a green whisper that keeps the heart from becoming too lush. The transition is gradual, almost tidal, each note bowing out as the next arrives. Eventually the composition turns inward.
Cultural impact
Un Bello holds a distinctive position, offering an aldehydic opening that sets it apart from many contemporary releases. The fragrance rewards close attention, revealing new facets the longer it sits on skin. There is a couture sensibility in how the notes are layered, each one given room to breathe rather than being crowded by the next. The aldehydes provide a lift that feels both nostalgic and current, bridging generations of perfumery without leaning too heavily on either. It is a composition that values intimacy over impact, choosing subtlety where others might choose volume.
