The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
190 Ans de Création 1828-2018 marks a milestone most houses never reach. The maison established in 1828 celebrated 190 years with this limited Absolu Parfum, a fragrance composed by Thierry Wasser and released in 2018. Only 761 bottles were made, each one a concentrated tribute to nearly two centuries of the Guerlain tradition. The composition draws from the Guerlinade, that signature accord the house has refined across generations, and distills it into something quiet and intensely focused. The almond lends its marzipan warmth, the benzoin brings a resinous sweetness that anchors the blend, and the orange blossom offers its bright white floral lift.
What's striking is how stripped the pyramid is. Six notes total: orange blossom, sandalwood, ylang-ylang, almond, benzoin, and orange. No fireworks, no exotic rares, no show-off ingredients. Just the Guerlain vocabulary compressed to its essentials, the way a pianist might reduce a sonata to its theme. The almond gives the blend its marzipan warmth, a soft nuttiness that rounds every other accord and gives the fragrance its gourmand undertone. Benzoin adds a resinous depth, a sweetness with texture rather than brightness.
The evolution
The opening arrives soft, almost apologetic. Almond cream and orange blossom close together, with a thread of orange zest bright underneath, like sunlight cutting through heavy curtains. No sharp citrus blast, just warmth already gathering. By the thirty-minute mark, the ylang-ylang begins to surface, turning the sweetness toward something more tropical, more golden. The benzoin deepens too, pulling the whole composition down into something resinous and plush. The drydown is where this earns its place: benzoin and sandalwood settle into a skin-like warmth that smells faintly of marzipan and warm wood. The sillage stays intimate throughout, a close-radius scent that rewards the curious wearer who leans in.
Cultural impact
Limited to 761 bottles, this anniversary release reads as a deliberate choice rather than a broad market statement. The small production run positions it as something apart from the maison's standard catalog, a piece meant for a narrow audience of dedicated collectors and longtime admirers. It commemorates 190 years of the maison's history, a milestone that few perfume houses ever reach, and the limited bottle count reflects the significance of that achievement. For those who already know the Guerlain world, it offers a concentrated expression of the house's signature style.
