The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Oudh Imperial arrived in 2010 as part of Henry Jacques's first public collection, marking the moment a house built on four decades of private commissions stepped into the light. The name says everything. Imperial is not a casual word here, it signals the material the house chose to lead with: oud, aged and resinous, treated with the same reverence Henry Jacques brings to fine jewellery. Where other houses might use oud as a base note or a whisper, Oudh Imperial opens with it. Clean, animalic, and deeply complex from the first spray. The 2010 debut was a statement of intent, that Henry Jacques would not simply enter the market, but enter it on the house's own terms.
What makes Oudh Imperial structurally unusual is its pyramid. Most oud fragrances open with citrus or spice to soften the resinous punch. This one doesn't. The oud arrives unfiltered and stays for the full duration, supported mid-stage by leather and geranium, two materials that add complexity without diluting the central note. The geranium is the quiet surprise: a green, slightly floral counterpoint that keeps the leather from becoming heavy-handed. By the time amber, patchouli, and vanilla arrive in the base, the oud has softened but not surrendered. The drydown is warm, animalic, and long-lasting, a finish that rewards patience.
The evolution
The opening is the event. Dark, resinous, almost medicinal oud that hits the palate before it hits the nose. Give it thirty minutes. The leather emerges, not harsh, but present, like a well-worn saddle. The geranium threads through, green and quiet, keeping the composition from becoming monolithic. By hour two, the oud has settled into itself. Amber and patchouli build slowly underneath, adding warmth and earth without replacing the star. The vanilla arrives last, hours in, a soft sweetness that rounds the edges. On most skin, eight to ten hours. On cloth, it lingers into the next day. Worn close to the skin but impossible to miss in a small room.
Cultural impact
Oudh Imperial sits in the upper tier of collector-oriented oud fragrances. Its strength and longevity make it a reference point for serious enthusiasts who want oud that performs without apology. The pricing reflects the house's positioning, this is not an entry-level scent, nor does it pretend to be. For those who seek it, the depth and complexity justify the expenditure.
