The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
What does a fragrance smell like when it's named after the world's most famous street? Olivier Cresp answered that question in 1996, building Champs Élysées around the mimosa, that golden flower blooming in Parisian parks each spring. The result is a fragrance that captures something of the avenue itself: grand, sunlit, alive with the energy of a city that never quite sits still. Part of Guerlain's Les Légendaires collection, Champs Élysées is a joyful celebration of yellow florals, translated into an EDP that holds its warmth long after the first spray.
The real story of Champs Élysées lives in its mimosa. Not a single ingredient but a construction, a combination of materials that together create its characteristic powdery-golden presence. In Champs Élysées, this mimosa lifts the sweeter fruit notes above it while its powdery depth anchors the composition. The heart brings lilac, lily of the valley, peony, and rose, florals that are simultaneously fresh and warm, avoiding any coldness. The base of benzoin's resinous vanilla, sandalwood's creamy warmth, and vanilla itself creates a drydown that lingers close and warm for hours, rounding out a fragrance that moves from bright opening to intimate finish without ever losing its character.
The evolution
The opening announces violet's cool elegance alongside ripe peach and blackcurrant, bright and tart with a subtle floral sweetness. Star anise adds an unexpected edge that keeps it from being merely pretty, grounding the brightness for about twenty minutes before the first phase passes and the heart takes over. At the heart, lilac and lily of the valley meet peony and rose, but it's the mimosa that floods in, heavy and golden, transforming the composition into something honeyed and intimate. The fresh green notes from the opening dissolve entirely into this warm, powdery bloom. As it settles, the sweetness gives way to something deeper: almond, benzoin's resin, sandalwood's cream, vanilla, and cedar wrap around the skin, warm, powdery, and intimate. It lasts.
Cultural impact
Champs Élysées has earned a devoted following among Guerlain enthusiasts who prize its bold yellow floral character. Wearers consistently report impressive longevity, the fragrance holds for a full workday and beyond on most skin types. The powdery floral heart deepens beautifully as it settles, becoming more intimate as hours pass. Some find the mimosa overwhelming; others find it irreplaceable. The sillage is notable without being aggressive, present, warm, and close.
