The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Susie Salmon takes its name and its spirit from GRANHAND's philosophy of everyday fragrance, scent as a daily ritual, not a special occasion. The 2023 release was inspired by the simple pleasure of a midday rest surrounded by flowers and fruit, that quiet hour when the light goes warm and everything slows down. GRANHAND, a Seoul-based house founded in 2014 in a traditional hanok in the Bukchon neighborhood, built its identity on the belief that fragrance should be comfortable, approachable, part of a routine rather than a performance. Susie Salmon is that belief made concrete: a scent warm enough to comfort, bright enough to uplift, and priced to be worn without thinking twice.
The note structure does something interesting, it refuses to choose between freshness and warmth. The top opens with crisp citrus and a green bite from the grass note, giving it immediate lift. But as the heart develops, the orchard fruits (apple, apricot, peach) round everything into softness, and the white florals, lily of the valley, jasmine, freesia, add body without weight. It's a composition that could have gone sharp or synthetic, but the sandalwood and amber in the base pull it toward warmth. The white musk keeps it clean. This is a fragrance that knows what it wants to be: wearable, warm, and just a little bit pretty.
The evolution
The opening hits with a burst of citrus, tangerine and lemon, bright and almost effervescent. The blackcurrant adds a dark berry undertone almost immediately, keeping it from smelling like cleaning product. Within twenty minutes, the green grass note fades and the heart takes over: apple and apricot emerge first, then the white florals layer in, jasmine, freesia, a whisper of rose. The transition is smooth, almost seamless. By the second hour, the sandalwood and amber have established themselves, and the white musk keeps everything close to the skin. The drydown is intimate, soft, lasting another four to six hours on most skin types. It doesn't transform dramatically, that's not what this fragrance is trying to do. It simply settles into something warm and comfortable and stays there.
Cultural impact
GRANHAND's approach sits apart from the loud, performative side of fragrance culture. The brand's multiple Seoul locations and its emphasis on daily wear over occasion-based scent have built a loyal following in Korea and among those who seek out the house's understated aesthetic. Susie Salmon, part of a 2023 collection that includes Marine Orchid, Kyujang, and NOLL, represents the house's clearest statement of its core philosophy: fragrance as comfort, not performance.
