The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Rose Pompon pays tribute to Annick Goutal's favourite flower, the pompon rose, round and generous in bloom. Launched in 2018, it was composed by Camille Goutal alongside perfumer Philippine Courtière as part of the house's ongoing floral canon. The name says it all: cheerful, abundant, full. Not a single rose petal dropped as metaphor. A rose in its most generous, unselfconscious form.
What makes Rose Pompon interesting is how it refuses to be a straightforward rose fragrance. The raspberry-grapefruit opening arrives tart and modern, almost biting before you expect it. That initial acidity makes the Bulgarian rose feel contemporary rather than nostalgic. Violet adds a powdery softness that keeps the heart from tipping into sweetness. Vanilla at the base anchors everything warm and close, extending wear without projecting loud. It's rose without the expected gestures.
The evolution
The opening hits sharp and fruity. Raspberry arrives first, bright and tart, followed by grapefruit zest that adds a citrus bite. Within minutes the Bulgarian rose begins to assert itself, softened immediately by violet's powdery presence. The hand-off is seamless, the fruit doesn't disappear so much as dissolve into the floral heart. By the second hour the rose and violet have settled into something intimate, the powdery quality more pronounced as the top notes recede. The vanilla base begins to show around hour three, adding warmth that keeps the composition close to skin. By hour four the drydown is primarily warm vanilla with a ghost of rose. On clothing the raspberry note can linger into the next day, which is either delightful or startling depending on your relationship with fruit.
Cultural impact
Rose Pompon joins a house built on floral storytelling, continuing a tradition of rose compositions that began with Annick Goutal herself. The 2018 EDP interpretation brings a fruity-fresh sensibility to that lineage, appealing to those who want rose without the expected formality.
