The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Givenchy's 2012 Couture collection didn't follow the usual seasonal playbook. Instead of a Harvest release, the house turned to textile effects, the textures, sensations, and codes that define a fashion house. Women's fragrances wore Lace Edition; masculine ones wore Leather Edition. Play For Him Leather Edition takes the original Play's signature and shifts it entirely. Where Play opened bright and citrus-fizzed, the Leather Edition goes darker from the first spray. Coffee becomes the anchor, providing a rich, roasted depth that grounds the composition. The leather isn't tacked on as a gimmick. It's woven through the composition as the connecting thread, giving the woody structure a worn-in quality that the original never aimed for.
What makes this composition stand apart is the role of coffee. In this fragrance, coffee takes center stage as the defining heart note, supported by vetiver's earthy depth and patchouli's balsamic warmth. The black pepper and citrus in the opening provide an aromatic jolt, but they clear quickly, leaving the coffee core to do the real work. Amyris adds a sweet-woody softness that keeps the leather from reading harsh. The interplay between these notes creates a fragrance with genuine complexity, one that reveals different facets as the hours pass, warm and unhurried in its development.
The evolution
The opening arrives crisp and aromatic. Citrus and black pepper hit first, a brief flash of brightness before the composition settles. Within ten minutes, coffee pushes through, dark, slightly bitter, almost roasted in its realism. The leather doesn't announce itself loudly. It weaves in as the drydown approaches, giving the woody base a tactile quality. Vetiver anchors the base alongside patchouli, creating an earthy foundation that holds through the final hours. Strong sillage means this fragrance announces itself readily. On skin, expect the coffee and leather to persist for more than seven hours, present but never overpowering. On fabric, the fragrance lingers well, softened but present even the next morning.
Cultural impact
Part of Givenchy's 2012 Couture collection, the Leather Edition stands apart from its siblings with its distinctive character. Rare on the secondary market, it attracts collectors drawn to its coffee-forward profile, a bold departure from the original Play's brightness. For those who found the original too light, the Leather Edition offers something darker, more settled, more their own.
