Why it exists.
The beginning
Farmacia SS. Annunziata named this one for its own address, the numerical kind, stripped of sentiment. 450 is the street number of the original Florentine pharmacy, turned here into something to wear. The house, founded in 1561, has spent centuries translating herbs and resins into usable forms: tinctures, remedies, perfumes. This fragrance carries that practical heritage into something more personal. A blend of powdery iris and smoky incense, built for skin rather than air.
What makes 450 interesting is the structure. The powdery iris note is well-established in perfumery, the Violet-talcum character of orris butter has anchored countless classic fragrances. But 450 doesn't let it stay soft. The smoky frankincense and green sage in the opening interrupt the softness before it becomes delicate. The amber warmth amplifies the iris, then the smoke arrives to ground it. That tension, between powder and smoke, is where the composition lives.
The evolution
The opening is the most assertive phase. Sage and black pepper hit quickly, brisk and almost astringent, with nutmeg adding warmth beneath. This phase lasts maybe fifteen minutes before it softens. The heart belongs to iris, powdery, slightly sweet, with the violet character that orris brings. Musky notes add depth without animalic force. As the top notes fade, the base takes over: vetiver's earthy dryness, sandalwood's creamy wood. The drydown stays close to skin. Four to six hours, sometimes more on fabric. On a scarf or a pillow the next morning, the iris and sandalwood linger like a memory of the original smell.
Cultural impact
450 occupies a particular space in the niche fragrance world, well-regarded for its powdery character and iris-forward heart, but neither a blockbuster nor a cult rarity. The fragrance has remained in production since its 2011 launch, which suggests steady demand without mainstream saturation. Wearers tend to describe it as the kind of scent someone chooses for themselves rather than for others: present but not projecting, distinctive without demanding attention.
