The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Simply You for Him arrived in 2012, a woody aromatic that found a place in Esprit's fragrance lineup. The composition is anchored by black pepper at the top and patchouli at the base, a pairing that gives the scent a recognizable structure from the first spray to the final hours of wear. Perfumers Juliette Karagueuzoglou and Nicolas Beaulieu built the fragrance around that bookend logic, pepper providing the bright spark up top while patchouli grounds everything below. In between sits a heart of sage, nutmeg, and African geranium, notes that bridge the spicy top and resinous base without letting either dominate. Released as a 30 and 50 ml EDT, it was meant to slot into a wardrobe, not a display case.
The construction leans on a classic masculine-aromatic framework, but the choice of African geranium in the heart is what gives it dimension. Geranium brings a greenish, almost rosy edge that sits between the sharp pepper opening and the resinous base, preventing the composition from collapsing into standard fresh-spicy territory. Sage contributes an herbal dryness that reads grown-up, not soapy, offering a slightly bitter green counterpoint to the warmer spice above.
The evolution
The first twenty minutes are where this fragrance makes its case. Bergamot lifts briefly, neroli adds a soft floral edge, then black pepper takes over and stays. The pepper isn't aggressive, it's just present, the kind of warmth you feel before you register what it is. Around the forty-minute mark the heart opens. Sage comes through dry and green, nutmeg adds a creamy sweetness, and African geranium bridges them with something almost rosy. The whole middle phase reads warm and grounded, never sharp. As the hours pass, the top and heart step back gradually, and the base takes over: benzoin introduces a low amber warmth, patchouli settles into its earthy signature, and cedar adds a clean woodiness that keeps the whole thing from going too dark. The drydown stays close to skin for an extended stretch, a soft warmth that holds on without projecting aggressively.
Cultural impact
Simply You for Him sits in the masculine-aromatic space, a woody spicy built around black pepper, geranium, and patchouli that doesn't reach for niche territory. It functions as the masculine counterpart to the Simply You for Her release, both sharing a romantic idea but rendered through different note structures suited to their respective wearers. Within Esprit's lineup, it holds a place as a versatile daily option, the kind of bottle that fits a range of settings without feeling out of place in any of them.
