The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Olivier Pescheux designed Imagine for Him for Esprit in 2010, the same year the brand extended its lifestyle philosophy into a fragrance that encouraged wearers to choose a scent matching their daily mood. The brand's creative brief for Imagine centered on clarity, approachability, and a hint of optimism, letting self-expression unfold naturally rather than announce itself. Inspired by dreams and wishes, the fragrance aimed to reveal inner emotions quietly, without fanfare. The pairing of luminous citrus with coffee was a deliberate choice: bright enough to open a room, grounded enough to stay.
The coffee-vetiver pairing is where Imagine for Him sets itself apart from standard citrusFresh fragrances. Bitter orange and Amalfi lemon open bright and immediate, but the roasted quality of Arabica coffee adds unexpected depth beneath the surface, a bitter counterpoint that keeps the top from feeling like a stereotype. This isn't a coffee fragrance in the way some scents center on it; it's coffee as architecture, holding up the brighter materials. The violet in the heart is the real surprise. Floral notes often function as decoration in masculine compositions, but here violet provides structural softness, it cushions the citrus-to-woody transition, making the progression feel organic rather than abrupt.
The evolution
The opening announces itself quickly, citrus brightness cutting through with bitter orange and Amalfi lemon, the coffee grounding everything from below like a table surface you can feel but not see. Within the first hour, the violet arrives and the energy shifts from sharp to soft, the geranium adding aromatic depth beneath the florals. The drydown is where the fragrance earns its restraint. Vetiver takes over, earthy, smoky, mineral, anchoring the composition with the kind of weight that doesn't announce itself. Sandalwood adds creaminess, lily a cool floral sweetness that lingers. The sillage moderates as it settles, staying close to the skin rather than projecting outward. Lasts 4-6 hours on most skin types, fading quietly rather than disappearing dramatically.
Cultural impact
Imagine for Him arrived in 2010 as part of Esprit's broader fragrance strategy, casual confidence translated into scent. The composition reflects a specific brief: clarity, approachability, a hint of optimism. It doesn't try to fill a room or make a statement. It simply shows up. For the wearer who wants fragrance without performance, that restraint is the appeal.
