The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
H01 arrived in 2023 as an Escentric Molecules creation made specifically for Harrods. That exclusivity makes sense. The London department store has long been the place where analytically-minded fragrance gets a physical home, where buyers come expecting something to think about, not just something that smells good. Geza Schön spent years building a reputation as a contrarian in the fragrance world, someone who grew frustrated with the industry's stagnation and its reliance on aromatic storytelling over actual chemistry. H01 is a direct response to that frustration. It's a fragrance that makes an argument: fruity and leathery can coexist with molecular transparency, and the result can still feel like something new.
What makes H01's note structure unusual for this house is the Davana. In traditional perfumery, Davana brings a sweet-fruity, almost whiskey-like warmth to compositions, it sits between aromatic herb and fermented fruit. Here, Schön pairs it with Freesia, Plum, and Peach to amplify the fruity dimension, then grounds the whole thing in Iso E Super, Amber, and Sandalwood. The result is a fragrance that behaves like an Escentric Molecules composition, transparent, molecular, intellectually engaging, but smells more conventionally beautiful than the pure Molecule line. The leather note doesn't arrive immediately. It builds. By the drydown, it's unmistakable.
The evolution
The opening arrives bright and clear: orange blossom, bergamot, mandarin, lime. The citrus is immediate but not aggressive, it's the kind of brightness that announces presence without demanding attention. Within minutes, the freesia and davana shift the register. The davana adds an aromatic wildness that sits oddly with the sweetness of plum and peach, a brief tension that resolves as the leather emerges. The dry leather arrives around the 20-minute mark. It's not the soft suede of some niche compositions. It's sharp, almost animalic, and it catches you off guard if you weren't expecting it. Then the amber and sandalwood take over. Iso E Super becomes the base, smooth and warm, wrapping the leather in something approachable. Patchouli and vetiver linger in the background, adding earthiness without heaviness. The drydown lasts through the evening. On fabric, the Iso E Super can persist until the next morning, a faint, warm cedar-like presence that's impossible to scrub away. It's the mark of something that stayed.
Cultural impact
H01 occupies an interesting position within the Escentric Molecules catalogue. The brand built its following on radical simplicity, fragrances defined by one molecule, nothing more. H01 is a departure: it's a full composition with multiple note families, yet it still centers Iso E Super as the structural backbone. For long-time followers, it's a surprise. For newcomers, it's the most approachable entry point the brand has offered. The Harrods exclusivity adds a layer of occasion to the fragrance, the kind of scent someone seeks out rather than stumbles upon. Wearers describe it as the fragrance of someone who walks into a room and doesn't need to announce themselves.
