The Story
Why it exists.
Geza Schön recognized patchouli's deep cultural resonance. The note carries decades of bohemian associations, the sixties and seventies it came to define. He built Molecule 01 + Patchouli around a refined interpretation, combining patchouli with Iso E Super to create something distinct. The result is an elevated take on a classic note, presented with clarity and purpose. The fragrance invites wearers to experience patchouli anew, stripped of preconceptions and reimagined through a contemporary lens. Schön's approach treats the note with respect while revealing dimensions that conventional interpretations often overlook.

The Beginning
Geza Schön recognized patchouli's deep cultural resonance. The note carries decades of bohemian associations, the sixties and seventies it came to define. He built Molecule 01 + Patchouli around a refined interpretation, combining patchouli with Iso E Super to create something distinct. Two qualities of patchouli compose the heart, not one. Patchouli Coeur forms the largest portion, a soft, clean oil fraction with the camphor-like top note removed. An Indonesian patchouli rounds out the composition with just enough top note to add presence without heaviness. The camphor removal is deliberate and total. What remains reads as cool woodiness rather than damp earth. Then Iso E Super enters as the other half of the equation. Together, the two materials create something unexpected, a partnership that elevates both components beyond their individual characteristics.
The Evolution
The opening reveals itself as the alcohol lifts. Iso E Super emerges and establishes itself within the initial moments, presenting itself quietly rather than aggressively. The cedar-adjacent quality becomes apparent early, offering warmth that stays close to the skin. Patchouli gradually reveals itself, arriving with restraint rather than making an immediate statement. It carries woodiness but maintains the camphor-free composure that characterizes this composition. As time passes, the two materials begin to interact more deeply. The drydown on skin presents clean woodiness that has absorbed Iso E Super's character, creating something that neither dominates nor disappears. The sillage remains close rather than projecting outward. The following morning, something subtle lingers against the wrist, a gentle reminder of the fragrance's presence.
Cultural Impact
Launched with a premise that challenged conventional patchouli expectations, this fragrance arrived offering the note in an unfamiliar context. The clean patchouli positioning appealed to those drawn to the depth of the material while wanting something different from the traditional expression. That distinction, between what was expected and what was delivered, became part of its appeal. The conversation around the fragrance continued as wearers discovered how it performed in practice.
The House
United Kingdom · Est. 2006
Escentric Molecules is a London-based fragrance house that challenged the conventions of perfumery when it launched in 2006. The brand built its identity around synthetic aroma-molecules, allowing individual chemicals like Iso E Super to take center stage rather than functioning as background enhancers. Its signature format presents fragrances in paired releases: the Molecule line features the pure, singular molecule, while the Escentric line pairs that same molecule with complementary ingredients. This minimalist, chemistry-forward approach produced an entirely new category in luxury fragrance. The brand operates from London with perfumer Geza Schoen based in Berlin, and has released five numbered pairs since inception, each centered on a different aroma-molecule with the depth to stand alone.

The scent reads like a muted autumn afternoon, woodsmoke at a distance, clean air, the feeling of materials settling into themselves. Sparse and confident. No urgency.
