The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Eric Buterbaugh Florals, the Los Angeles brand founded in 2015, built its identity on translating garden bouquets into wearable perfume. Each release centers a single bloom or thoughtful floral blend, treating fragrance as floral art. For Oud Orange Flower, Buterbaugh set an ambitious goal: capture the luminous, almost translucent beauty of orange blossom and pair it with something unexpectedly deep, something that would challenge the flower's usual brightness. The result required a perfumer capable of holding two opposing worlds in balance, and Buterbaugh found that in Dora Baghriche-Arnaud, whose work with bright accords and dark woods made her the ideal collaborator for this project.
The pairing of orange blossom with oud is deliberate and philosophical: it asks whether light and dark can coexist in the same bottle without one consuming the other. Orange blossom represents the sun-drenched, optimistic side of florals, while oud represents depth, age, and complexity. By grounding the bright top notes in a dark heart and mossy base, the composition refuses to be categorized as simply a floral or simply an oriental. Champa flower and frangipani bridge the opening and heart, adding tropical warmth that prevents the oud from feeling too austere. Vetiver provides the olfactory equivalent of shadow, keeping the heart from feeling flat.
The evolution
The fragrance begins as a celebration of white florals, with orange blossom and frangipani projecting warmth and champa flower adding exotic depth. Bergamot keeps the opening airy and citrus-bright. As minutes pass, patchouli appears with its earthy, slightly sweet presence, followed closely by oud, which introduces dark resinous wood and a hint of smoke. Vetiver threads through this heart, adding green, smoky complexity that elevates the darker notes rather than dulling them. The oud never overwhelms the florals entirely, but it fundamentally changes the conversation. By the time oakmoss and vanilla arrive in the drydown, the composition has transformed from a radiant floral into something warm, mossy, and quietly sensual, with the vanilla offering a final note of softness that lingers on skin for hours.
Cultural impact
Since its 2017 arrival, Oud Orange Flower has become a touchstone for fans of floral‑oud hybrids, often cited in niche forums as the go‑to bridge between bright citrus bouquets and deep woody bases. Wearers note its ability to turn a daytime garden stroll into an evening‑ready aura, making it a frequent pick for art‑opening after‑parties and upscale brunches where a sophisticated yet approachable scent is prized.
