The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Blue Lagoon comes from Dark Tales, a house that has built its catalogue around the idea that fragrance should tell a story. As a Swedish indie niche perfume house, the brand treats each composition as a piece of larger storytelling, drawing on history, literature, and dark narrative traditions. In 2025, perfumer Arina P. Franzén composed Blue Lagoon as part of the Pin-Up Mixology collection, a limited-edition line. The fragrance represents a brighter, more luminous moment in a catalogue that often leans toward shadow and atmosphere, an opportunity for the perfumer to work with light, water, and open air rather than closed rooms and heavy smoke.
What sets Blue Lagoon apart from the rest of the Dark Tales catalogue is its commitment to air. Where the brand typically explores shadow, smoke, and depth, this composition stretches upward and outward, trading density for lift. The ozone accord is the structural choice that makes the whole thing work, providing a cool, atmospheric current that runs beneath the citrus and gives the entire fragrance its sense of openness. Without that ozone, the composition would risk collapsing into something far more conventional, a bright splash of grapefruit and bergamot with little to anchor it.
The evolution
The opening is aggressive in its brightness. Sweet orange, grapefruit, bergamot, and lemon all arrive at once, and the ozone rides over them like a cold wind, sharp and immediate. The citrus quartet feels like a deliberate decision to overwhelm, four notes pulled from the same bright family stacked into a wall of acidity that demands attention. Within fifteen minutes, the sharpness softens. The ozone doesn't fade so much as it stretches, pulling the citrus into a cooler, more diffuse space where lavender and water lily become readable. The transition is gradual, almost meteorological, the storm of the opening clearing into something calmer and more breathable. The floral heart is present but quiet, more suggestion than statement, a softness that prevents the ozone from feeling clinical or cold. By the two-hour mark, the composition has shed most of its sparkle.
Cultural impact
Blue Lagoon sits at the brighter end of the Dark Tales catalogue, a release that pulls toward light, water, and open air rather than the closed, candlelit spaces the brand often evokes. The Pin-Up Mixology collection, of which Blue Lagoon is a part, gave the house room to play with ozonic and citrus-led compositions, materials that don't typically dominate the rest of the line. The result is a fragrance that wears well in warmer months and appeals to anyone drawn to clean, ozonic styles built on a citrus foundation rather than heavier aromatic or resinous structures.
