Why it exists.
The beginning
Alchemy Potion is part of Dark Tales' Alchemist's Dungeon collection, a side project that returns to the brand's roots in oil-based scents and ritual. It's less perfume, more atmosphere. Founder and perfumer Arina P. Franzén built the composition around dark cocoa, myrrh, and aged vanilla, with coffee and benzoin filling the middle ground. The opening has that toasted-cocoa bitterness tempered by the resinous pull of benzoin, the kind of warmth that fills a small room before you've even noticed. Coffee doesn't shout so much as murmur underneath, adding a roasted depth that keeps the sweetness honest. Myrrh arrives with weight, almost smoky, like incense curling through a doorway. As the composition settles, the vanilla softens every sharp edge without flattening them.
What's interesting here is how few notes Arina P. Franzén asked to do the work. Benzoin, cocoa, coffee, myrrh, vanilla. That's the entire architecture. The trick is how they fold into each other instead of competing. Benzoin acts as a bridge between the resinous myrrh and the edible warmth of cocoa and vanilla. Coffee sharpens that sweetness, keeps it from collapsing into dessert territory. The evolution
The opening is the loudest moment and it doesn't last. Cocoa and coffee arrive first, dark and slightly bitter, with benzoin giving the edges a sticky, almost caramelized glow. It's the olfactory equivalent of stepping into a kitchen where someone just pulled a tray from the oven. As the composition settles, the myrrh starts pushing through, and the whole thing tilts. The gourmand warmth doesn't disappear, but it recedes enough for the resin to claim the space. This is where the fragrance stops being sweet and starts being serious. The vanilla gradually takes over the lead role, but it arrives with myrrh still threaded through it, so what you get is something closer to a church candle than a dessert.
