The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Dark Tales, founded in 2019 on Sweden's Åland Islands, builds fragrances from folklore and darkness. When conceiving King's Jester, the brief was simple yet challenging: capture the duality of the medieval court fool, whose laughter masked sharp wit and occasional danger. Perfumer Arina P. Franzén approached this by starting with theatricality, the kind that fills a throne room lit by beeswax candles, and then stripping it back to something more honest. The choice of Candle Wax and Red Mandarin for the opening establishes that theatrical warmth immediately, while the leather and suede in the base represent the jester's secret self, the one that knows where the bodies are buried.
The note philosophy behind King's Jester is built on contrasts that reveal character. Candle Wax and Red Mandarin create an opening that is warm yet bright, theatrical yet inviting. Tonka Bean bridges the performance and the person, adding sweetness without losing the thread of danger. The base then commits fully to that danger, Leather and Suede evoking worn costumes and the physicality of the fool's trade, while Ebony Wood and Vanilla ground the composition in something darker and more intimate. This is fragrance as storytelling, where each layer represents a different face of the same character.
The evolution
The fragrance begins in a candlelit throne room where the fool makes his first entrance. Red Mandarin sparks against the warm wax, a moment of citrus brightness that cuts through the smoke. As the performance continues, the mandarin fades and Tonka Bean takes over, its sweet warmth representing the jester's gift for charm. But charm is a tool, not the truth. The drydown reveals what lies beneath the motley: Leather and Suede, worn from years of service, textured by use. Ebony Wood adds darkness, the weight of secrets carried. Vanilla softens the edges just enough to keep the wearer sane, a reminder that even fools need comfort when the candles burn down.
Cultural impact
Since its 2023 debut, King's Jester has sparked conversation among niche collectors for its unapologetically bold leather front and the unusual candle‑wax opening. Wearers often note its ability to command attention in Intimate settings, drawing comparisons to Tom Ford Ombre Leather while retaining a distinct narrative twist. Its polarizing character makes it a favorite for those seeking a scent that tells a story rather than fades into the background.
