Dark Tales, founded in 2019 on Sweden's Åland Islands, builds fragrances from folklore and darkness. When conceiving King's Jester, the brief was simple yet challenging: capture the duality of the medieval court fool, whose laughter masked sharp wit and occasional danger. Perfumer Arina P. Franzén approached this by starting with theatricality, the kind that fills a throne room lit by beeswax candles, and then stripping it back to something more honest. The choice of Candle Wax and Red Mandarin for the opening establishes that theatrical warmth immediately, while the leather and suede in the base represent the jester's secret self, the one that knows where the bodies are buried.
The note philosophy behind King's Jester is built on contrasts that reveal character. Candle Wax and Red Mandarin create an opening that is warm yet bright, theatrical yet inviting. Tonka Bean bridges the performance and the person, adding sweetness without losing the thread of danger.
