Why it exists.
The beginning
Retrô arrived in 2019 from Ciclo Cosméticos, a Brazilian cosmetics and fragrance house. The perfumer behind it is Edison Fujita, and the brief here reads as an oriental floral that holds both gourmand and floral territory at once. The name itself leans into nostalgia, into something familiar, but the composition isn't stuck in the past. It pulls together a sweet, fruity-amber structure, and the opening is unashamedly fruit-forward: bergamot, blackcurrant, raspberry. That's a lot of sweetness before the florals even show up. Then white florals do the heavy lifting through the middle, jasmine sambac carrying most of the weight, with orange blossom and osmanthus adding brightness and an apricot undertone that softens the berry sweetness above.
What's notable about this pyramid is how it stacks fruit over florals over amber, rather than the other way around. Here, blackcurrant and raspberry are the handshake, and that ordering shapes everything that follows. The jasmine sambac anchoring the heart is also doing specific work. Sambac has a creamy, slightly animalic depth compared to other jasmine varieties, and the orange blossom alongside it lifts the heart out of any single dimension.
The evolution
The first hour belongs to the fruits. Bergamot lifts the opening slightly, but blackcurrant and raspberry are the loudest voices, jammy rather than fresh, the kind of berry sweetness that reads more like jam on toast than fruit in a bowl. Eventually that fruit recedes just enough for the white florals to take over. Jasmine sambac arrives first, dense and creamy, then orange blossom adds a bright quality that cuts through the creaminess. Osmanthus sits underneath, adding a faint apricot skin that keeps the florals from feeling powdery or overly sweet. In the later stages of wear, the florals have handed the composition to the base. Amber, benzoin, tonka, vanilla, and patchouli combine into a warm, golden drydown. The berries are still detectable as a faint sweetness underneath, almost a memory of the opening rather than a presence.

Retrô's Brazilian origin shapes its character, giving it a warmth and roundness that runs through the composition.
