Why it exists.
The beginning
November arrived in 2008 from Christopher Brosius, the perfumer behind CB I Hate Perfume. The brand treats scent as autobiography rather than ornament, and November is one of the most literal entries in the catalog. Brosius didn't set out to make a seasonal perfume so much as bottle November itself, that particular stretch of late autumn when the last apples drop, the first fires get lit, and the woods go damp and fungal. The brand's official description reads less like a fragrance note list and more like a nature inventory: pumpkin pie, fallen apples, bonfire, wood smoke, dried grass, fallen leaves, wet branches, damp moss, chanterelle mushrooms, and a hint of pine. Every element is a real thing you'd find on a late-autumn afternoon. No abstraction. No interpretation.
What makes November structurally unusual is its refusal to behave like a traditional fragrance pyramid. There is no floral heart. There is no citrus opening. Instead, the composition opens directly into decay and smoke, mushroom and moss, the damp underside of a forest in late fall. The sweetness comes from pumpkin and apple, but it's the sweetness of things rotting gently on the ground, not pie fresh from the oven. Brosius chose chanterelle and boletus edulis, actual edible mushrooms, as structural notes, alongside hay, wheat, and damp branches.
The evolution
The first spray lands like stepping off a trail into a clearing where someone's been burning yard waste. Smoke and damp moss arrive simultaneously, no warm-up, no citrus to soften the entry. The woods come forward quickly, carrying pine, moss, and the unmistakable fungal sweetness of chanterelles. There's a sweetness underneath, pumpkin and baked apple, but it reads more like fruit decomposing on grass than anything from a kitchen. The smoke settles as the composition matures, and the wet branches and hay take over, earthy and still. The mushrooms stay present in a way most fragrance ingredients never do, almost savory, almost edible. Eventually, the woods recede and what's left is a close-to-skin blend of moss, dried leaves, and the ghost of woodsmoke clinging to a scarf. The sillage is moderate, the kind that stays close rather than projecting across a room.
Cultural impact
November occupies a strange corner of the fragrance world. It uses actual edible mushrooms as structural notes, chanterelle and boletus edulis, alongside oakmoss and other woodland materials. Wearers tend to be specific: people who hike, who forage, who want to smell like a place rather than a person. It does not perform like a conventional fragrance. Reviews frame it less as a perfume and more as an olfactory photograph, a specific afternoon preserved in liquid form.
